Day15 #30daymapchallenge is Fire 🔥
My map is a gif of #Sentinel1 images before & after the #wildfire at Winter Hill in the West Pennine Moors, UK in 2018.
The dashed line shows the extent of the fire, which burned on dry #peatland for over 40 days.
The colour range from blue to orange symbolises how radar backscatter represents water bodies/wetter surfaces through to dry, impermeable land cover & demonstrates the positive effects of #peatlandrestoration works since the fire.
All using #qgis
We found some interesting visuals illustrating how well #wildfire damage can be #mapped with #remotesensing when Dr Daniel Hölbling & I undertook a project on the potential of #Sentinel1 to delineate #peatland.
This animation shows in the lined area the effects of the 2018 Winter Hill wildfire in Lancashire & #peatlandrestoration works since.

All using the power of #qgis
After 18 months of research with Dr Daniel Hölbling, our work on the use of #sentinel1 #SAR to delineate #peatland has been published.

Achieved with no funding, utilising #Copernicus #openaccess & #opensource #QGIS.
Really hope this can help those involved in #peatlandrestoration. Plenty more ideas in the pipeline in supporting #naturebasedsolutions. Check out our previous research on #naturalfloodmanagement

Moss Reclaims the Oilfields: A Green Blueprint for Peatland Revival | Geekoo

University of Waterloo researchers have developed a moss-based method to restore decommissioned oil well sites back into functional peatlands, offering a scalable solution for ecological rehabilitation and carbon sequestration.

Wide-ranging & important report for @scotwildlife on #naturebasedsolutions by Ellie Brodie.
Report calls for a strengthening of the #naturalfloodmanagement #nfm evidence base. #remotesensing & #gis analysis can support this evidence resource.
Also #peatlandrestoration rates currently less than half the Scottish Gov target.
Change need in gathering/communicating the evidence on the #ecosystemservices provided by this key habitat. Remote sensing & GIS are here to help
