Using Navier-Stokes equations and simple experiments, Brown University physicists explored thin liquid films in the kitchen. Milk drains in ~30s, olive oil in 9+ min. Thin film physics everywhere!

How long does it take to get last liquid drops from kitchen containers? These physicists know the answer

At some point, most people have found themselves holding a tilted carton of milk or bottle of cooking oil, patiently waiting for the last drops to drip out. Now, physicists at Brown University have done the math to show just how long you might have to wait.

Dicing an Onion, the Mathematically Optimal Way

There is more than one way to dice an onion…

I realized that I’d be able to do this at reduced daylight, and it’d STILL look awesome!! 🙂
The daylight version removes a lot of the glare and you can see the beam and reflection on the bottom of the tub better 🙂

Got my hands on some dry ice and did what any responsible grandpa would do—turn my kitchen into a low-budget horror movie for my grandson. (He loved it.)🔥💨👻

Enjoy!

Last night I made (started) pizza dough. First a chaotically shaggy mess, then an elastic mess, then shiny elastic blob. This morning it’s a huge bubble monster. I need to intervene and fold away those bubbles 🫧, awaken the elastic glutens, then cut the thing apart into quarters for a chill session. Baking, cooking, if you’re so inclined, is always interesting. #baking #yeastDough #cooking #cookery #science #kitchenScience

Oh hey - found an archived version of the #Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article from 2010 about my #KitchenChemistry course.

Somewhat flattering article I'll add (even if I'm being shameless and self-promoting). I do hope to keep at this for #SciComm and Outreach even if offering the course has gotten harder. Was a lot of work but fun (and students' joy & learning & enthusiasm kept me going those days- well, till 2017)

- image-based analysis of the #bubble shape, velocities and so on
- even the setup looks really familiar (and is really expensive, by the way)

It is a beautiful video but also illustrates the research process we follow.

“The #Tornado The water in the top bottle is not draining initially as a low pressure develops in the gas phase above the water holding it up and it cannot equalize with the bottom bottle's pressure. The gas tornado builds a pressure equalization bridge to the lower bottle.”

@SRDas Thats a fun idea! I didn’t think of doing experiments in my knife skills classes, but you gave me food for thought! 😉 Thanks.
Started following you and #kitchenscience , and will use #cookingclass myself.

#introduction - hi everyone!

brand new to this, traditionally a lurker rather than a sharer but maybe that’ll change!

my things are #plants, #mushrooms, #ferments, #sourdough, #kitchenscience - anything to do with #mould or #fungi is my jam 🍄 if that sounds like you then come say hi!
