"To advance his vision, Jabotinsky broke from the mainstream Zionist movement and founded his own political faction, known as Revisionist Zionism. It emphasized nationalism, free markets, and above all, security. The ideological battle lines were now clear. In 1923, he put his beliefs into writing in one of the most controversial essays in Zionist history: 'The Iron Wall.'

In it, Jabotinsky called for massive Jewish immigration into the region to achieve a majority, with the ultimate goal of establishing a state where Arabs and Jews 'can live together in peace, like good neighbors.' He made clear that he didn’t want to expel the Arabs or deny them equal rights, but he believed peaceful co-existence couldn’t come through negotiation – at least not yet. It would only become possible once the Arabs accepted that the Jewish presence in the land was permanent and unshakable.

Some of the language in his essay didn’t age well. He referred to the Arabs as natives and Jews as colonizers, writing: 'Every native population in the world resists colonists as long as it has the slightest hope of being able to rid itself of the danger of being colonized.'

He also wrote that 'Zionist colonisation must either stop, or else proceed regardless of the native population. Which means that it can proceed and develop only under the protection of a power that is independent of the native population – behind an iron wall, which the native population cannot breach.'

It’s raw, even unsettling. However, to Jabotinsky, this wasn’t about replacement or domination; it was about realism — facing the conflict head-on, without illusions.

(. . .)

Jabotinsky’s essay shocked the Zionist establishment. He was accused of fueling extremism, playing into Arab fears, and undermining fragile diplomatic efforts with the British. The rift between Jabotinsky and his fellow Zionists grew into a chasm. He became bitter rivals with Ben-Gurion and built an entirely separate political movement — one that would reshape Zionism from the outside."

The story is from the beginning of the #intifada and before #11September2001

It's also about a year before a massive anti Muslim #pogroms in #Gujarat that killed thousands of people. I never realised how close in time all that was, I knew it was all really this century, but I didn't realise it was all within a year.

The story is older than I thought, when I first saw it I wondered if it was getting attention to manufacture consent for the USA invasion of #Afghanistan but it's before that even hit triggered.

I also know questioning who named the #GujeratPogrom that, I think the name fits, but there is a big gap in both time and space between that and the antisemitism in Russia and the rest of Europe that originally got the name.

It would make more sense if the #WestBank #Pogroms came first. The Israeli left and right have been calling each other Nazis since before Israel existed. #BenGurion called #Jabotinsky "Vladimir Hitler" so it's entirely expected that settler violence gets that label from liberal Israelis, but the earliest mention I've seen of that is 2008?

Book review: **Dimitri Shomsky**. Did Zionism Seek to Establish a Nation-State? The Zionist Political Imagination from Pinsker to Ben-Gurion (1882-1948)

Dimitri Shomsky's book challenges the conventional narrative of Zionist aspirations, arguing that before the Peel Commission's 1937 proposal to partition Palestine, the dominant Zionist vision wasn't necessarily a fully independent nation-state. Instead, Shomsky posits that many Zionist leaders favored a model of Jewish autonomy within existing empires, drawing parallels to similar aspirations of other nationalities within the Austro-Hungarian, Russian, and Ottoman empires.

He examines the writings of key Zionist figures like #Herzl, #Jabotinsky, and Ben-Gurion, highlighting instances where their proposals suggested a degree of autonomy rather than outright independence.

The book also explores the influence of the "Helsinki Program," a plan focusing on securing equal rights for Jews within the Russian Empire. Shomsky's work introduces previously unknown Russian-language materials, particularly concerning Jabotinsky's dual commitment to both Jewish nationalism and his deep-rooted connection to his Russian identity.

The author ultimately presents an alternative historical perspective on Zionism, suggesting a path that could have been, but wasn't, taken.

ZIONISM: PART FOUR - Jabotinsky, Fascism, Strauss and the Neocons

Sie wollen, was alle Menschen wollen: #Freiheit.

- MAJ
