Benchmarking the detection of adaptive introgression from divers...

My latest publication on native honey bee introgression in Britain and Ireland is out. Worth a look even if you just want to enjoy some pie charts overlayed onto maps!

In a first, evolutionary biologists have identified a gene that influences visual preferences in tropical butterflies

Tropical Heliconius butterflies are well known for the bright color patterns on their wings. These striking color patterns not only scare off predators—the butterflies are poisonous and are distasteful to birds—but are also important signals during mate selection.

If you work on evolutionary networks (ancestral recombination graphs, #admixture graphs, #phylogenetic networks), please submit an abstract to our symposium on "Networks in population genetics and phylogenetics: Theory, methods, and applications". It will be part of #Evol2024 in Montreal, July 26-30: https://www.evolutionmeetings.org

Surprise Discovery Shows Blue Whales Have Been Mating With Another Species

New research suggests interspecies hanky panky between blue and fin whales is more common than we thought, at least in certain parts of the world.

Neanderthal gene variants associated with greater pain sensitivity

People who carry three gene variants inherited from Neanderthals are more sensitive to some types of pain, according to a new study co-led by UCL researchers.

Hybridizing #species are usually maintained by genome-wide selection against #introgression or by selection on a few “genomic islands.” @yanivbrandvain & Shelley Sianta explore #PLOSBiology study which finds a new pattern – 60 SNPs across the #genome differentiate #Penstemon species with different #pollinators. A few essential genetic loci distinguish Penstemon species with flowers adapted to pollination by bees or hummingbirds

A genomic study of 229 individuals from a Penstemon species complex that includes both bee and hummingbird pollination syndromes reveals that although genome-wide differentiation between species is minimal, about 20 "species-diagnostic loci," with fixed differences between syndromes, are sprinkled throughout the genome in high recombination regions.
