Every year, the monarch butterfly makes one of the animal kingdom’s most wondrous migrations as millions flutter across the United States to warmer climates. Butterflies as a whole have been in decline across North America, with pesticides, habitat loss and climate change sharing much of the blame. But a dedicated group of experts haven’t given up hope for the beloved insect’s future. @Smithsonianmag has more:

Still not many #butterflies around but there’s been a bit of uptick in activity the past week. This was the first gulf fritillary I’ve seen making a stop in the front #garden, spent a little time with the mealy blue sage before flittering on.
