This caretaker government, after losing the #election, is using its last days to benefit its allies. These permits must be revoked—#whales deserve protection, not political betrayal.

🚨 #Breaking: In a shocking move, acting PM #BjarniBenediktsson rushed through a 5-year #whaling permit just days before a new government takes office.

The permits, granted to companies linked to Benediktsson, allow the slaughter of up to 217 #minke and 209 #FinWhales annually. This comes despite strong opposition and a recent inquiry exposing cruel hunting practices. 🐋

• 5 MORE YEARS OF WHALE HUNTING IN ICELAND •

The Icelandic government just granted permits for 5 more years of hunting #FinWhales and #MinkeWhales !

Eating #whales isn’t a tradition, this nonsense only benefits a small group of individuals that find interest in this barbaric and outdated #hunt !

Less than 1.5% of Icelandic people actually eat whale meat which is the reason why most of it is shipped to #Japan where it ends up in vending machine and dog food…

Yes… #WhalingLicenses, in plural. For the first time in years, #MinkeWhales will be hunted in #Iceland, along with #FinWhales.

#BjarniBenediktsson who just lost the Icelandic election and has no #mandate, has issued whaling licenses for the next 5 years. This decision wasn’t supposed to be made now, with a review of Icelandic whaling #law still ongoing. But he didn’t wait. These #licenses benefit #companies owned by his friends. It’s #corruption at its clearest.

The Inertia

Operating in breach of the ICJ ruling for several years, Japan eventually ceased Antarctic high-seas whaling in 2016, and has until 2018 only hunted #whales within its territorial waters. Since Watson's arrest less than two weeks ago, Japan has announced that they have resumed the hunt of #endangered #FinWhales, the world's second largest animal. CPWF believes Japan is planning to resume high-seas whaling in the #NorthPacific as early as this year.

"Japan needs Paul Watson out of the way so they can get back to slaughtering the world’s great whales.”

stated #LockyMacLean on board the Captain Paul Watson flagship off the coast of Greenland, which was en route across the Arctic to oppose the Japanese whaling effort until Mr. Watson’s arrest.

#FinWhales, the world’s second-largest whales, remain vulnerable according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, driven to the brink of #extinction
