Maintaining a community workforce in low-resources settings is challenging. Okech et al. conducted a quasi-experiment in Uganda to evaluate different incentive and performance-based approaches. A mix of stipends and performance-based incentives seem to be most effective. Check it out here:

Quality of life among healthcare workers in Gaza during the October 7 war: a cross-sectional analysis - BMC Health Services Research

Background Healthcare workers (HCWs) in Gaza face extreme personal and professional strain amid the ongoing war since October 2023. Prolonged violence, healthcare collapse, and widespread displacement have likely worsened their quality of life (QoL). This study assesses QoL and its associated factors among HCWs in Gaza’s leading governmental hospitals. Methods This cross-sectional study, conducted in November–December 2024, surveyed HCWs across seven hospitals using convenience sampling. Eligible participants were physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory technicians. Data collection included sociodemographic information, war-related exposures, and the Arabic version of the WHOQOL-BREF instrument. Bivariate analyses (independent t-tests and ANOVA) were performed to examine subgroup differences in QoL scores. Variables significant at p < 0.05 were included in multiple linear regression models to identify independent predictors of overall and domain-specific QoL scores. Results A total of 403 HCWs participated (56.6% male, mean age 31.16 years ± 7.6). Nurses (44.9%) and physicians (36.2%) were the primary respondents. Most held bachelor’s degrees (74.2%) and had ≤ 5 years of experience (62.5%). War-related trauma was widespread: 57.6% lost a friend, 56.3% a coworker, and 46.9% reported loss of family livelihood. The mean overall QoL was 46.9 (SD 23.07). The environmental domain scored the lowest (24.08), while the social domain scored the highest (46.38). Multivariate analysis revealed that loss of family livelihood was consistently associated with lower QoL across psychological, social, and environmental domains. Female sex, residence in the southern enclave during the Strip’s partition by the Israeli army at the time of the study, and the death of a second-degree or distant relative were also associated with lower environmental QoL. The death of a friend was unexpectedly associated with higher psychological QoL. No significant predictors emerged for physical QoL. Conclusions This study highlights the severe decline in the QoL of HCWs in Gaza during the war, particularly in the environmental and psychological domains. The findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive support strategies to protect HCWs’ well-being as a cornerstone of healthcare system resilience in conflict zones.

Long COVID Hitting Doctors and Nurses Hard

Healthcare workers have been dealing with long COVID symptoms at a higher rate than the general public. The system’s response has been mixed at best.

Run. Hide. Fight. What the CDC shooting means for public health

Friday’s shooting at the CDC follows years of backlash against public health since the pandemic. Bound by a commitment to protect people, public health workers aren’t giving up.

Along with the now-proven streamlined #HealthCare credential approval process in #BC, there is plenty of activity to welcome émmigres from the USA.

#BritishColumbia added #Nurses & other #HCW to the provincial invitation, meaning they get additional points for immigration.

Staying on #Nurses, NCLEX is the standard in most provinces. Discussions happening about advanced practice, such as CRNA, require faculty, etc.

@sleepy62

My first clues about this election would play out was a #BCCons door-knocker duo last spring/early summer.

The one was clearly training in the other, who gave me their pitch, which targeted the #BCNDP on health care topics, particularly Health Care Workers #HCW numbers and training, and number of clinics and hospital beds.

My partner is a #Nurse researcher at #UBC. I have inside information. Nearly every statement they made was provably false.

They grilled me when I said that.
