TIL each building in #Japan has a #GFCI unit in the breaker box, which protects all outlets connected to said box.

Gratifying meetings of the Committee on Electrical Maintenance, creating the second draft of NFPA 73, Electrical #Inspection of Existing #Dwellings. One change for 2025 adoption: no more grandfathering for receptacles that need #GFCI protection. I hadn't expected us to go this far, but when someone buys a home, this will protect them. Another is more a camel's nose: an Annex reminder re #bonding past #dielectric fittings or plastic tubing interrupting metal #plumbing.

I want to install a power outlet on this wall (probably underneath the toilet paper holder). There's a light switch right above that. I think I need to install GFCI.

However, there's also what looks like a GFCI plate on another wall in the same water closet, behind the door. No outlets though. It's not an appropriate location for my project, since it would result in power cords stretching across the doorway.

I think I ought to be able to pull power from the light switch above without making this a switched outlet. How do I learn how to? Is there a good reference? Or do I just call an electrician for this?

Wiring up a 240 14-50 outlet for my wife's new car. Trying to do everything roughly to code. Had to put it in conduit because of the legacy of the #Chicago fire. Had to use a $125 #gfci breaker because this is a garage. For some reason. Gfci is also on the #evse, so I'm worried about nuisance tripping. I'm an electrical engineer, right, so I can learn this stuff. Right?

Lowes only sells spools of 6/3 8/1 cable. A bit spendy. I used only about 4 feet.

Ta-da! However, I found older outlets behind the sofa and two six-foot bookcases. They'll get new white #GFCI outlets today. Fingers crossed that the living room will be fully painted this evening, and I can move on to painting the dining room.

Looking for a way to ditch the 20W power brick on this #Apple #HomePod I found an outlet with an integrated 65W Power Delivery 3.0 output

Pretty awesome. Only problem is I also need GFCI for this location  Turns out there are plenty of USB-C outlets with #GFCI, but none of them go above 5V. Of course the #HomePodMini needs 9V to be happy…

Proud and wiped out
After months of study, I’ve commented on proposed changes to #UL 101, #ApplianceLeakage. I don’t serve on SC101, which is responsible for it, but SC943, GFCIs.
Because #GFCI design doesn’t account for efficient #motors#HighFrequency #waveforms, both UL 943 & UL 101 need updates. It may be easier for manufacturers to have #appliance #standards that avoid expensive redesign than to let GFCIs protect the most vulnerable–yet we’re all extrapolating from inadequate #research.
Someone more familiar with #eletrical #wiring and #CircuitBreakers than me please help me understand something: as far as I know, my bathroom has at most a 20 amp fuse. Yet my wife was able to run the heater on low (reported 1500 watts low) and hair dryer (reported 1875 watts) simultaneously. By the math of an online calculator, this should've been just shy of 30 amps. American circuits, so should be 120 volts. Did I miss-math? #electricity #gfci #power #pleaseboost
