I'm using #Ubuntu #Linux on an old #iMac with #dvgrab to download the exact copies of all my #MiniDV tapes in #DV format.

But I have to say... This thing is a monster.

Can anyone recommend a laptop with #Firewire 800 that also runs Linux well?

Nice! I was able to use #dvgrab with my #FireWire card and #DV #camera without any configuration on #Fedora #Linux. I won't be sticking to it because of the short term support, but happy to know that part of my old PC will work just fine under Linux!

Thinking about going with #AlmaLinux instead because of the longer support cycle. That or #ZorinOS.

capturing #miniDV tapes is a pain in the ass but I finally got it.

live booted #debian 12 on our old #macbookpro 2010 that has #firewire, currently running #dvgrab and it looks like it's going well

#dvgrab works for hours, then fails to see any camera even while in the middle of capturing. If it is a bug I hope it gets fixed, if it isn't then I'm at a loss for words on what it could be.
