I mostly edit posts to fix typos I didn't catch until someone has already favourited/boosted.

I keep seeing articles like this, about how people choosing to drink less is hurting bars and restaurants, and it's almost always framed as people, especially younger generations, don't like to drink.

They never seem to bring up the fact that a cocktail is like $20 now unless you go to a really divey dive bar. It's the same kind of reporting they on how no one goes to the movies anymore. It's always about changing habits, and never that movie tickets just cost a lot now.

Dinner and No Drinks: Restaurants Are Struggling as Americans Drink Less

Traditionally a reliable revenue stream for restaurants, alcoholic drinks are down markedly — and the bottom line is, too.

@kalleboo has done it again with a wonderful new app for #marchintosh: an interactive click-and-paint canvas.

It's only been up for 24 hours, and already lots of people have made their mark.

Who knows how much fun you can have with pixel painting on a vintage Mac after you've had a few pints of Guinness today? Happy St. Patrick's Day! 🍀 🍻

To play with the MARCHintosh Canvas, get yourself onto #GlobalTalk, connect to the BaroNet zone, go to the "landisk" share, and look for it in the #MARCHintosh #GlobalTalk folder.

Qihoo 360's AI Product Leaked the Platform's SSL Key, Issued by Its Own CA Banned for Fraud | Barrack AI

Okay #hardware #nerd types and #DataHoarders or #DigitalArchivists...

I'm using #Ubuntu #Linux on an old #iMac with #dvgrab to download the exact copies of all my #MiniDV tapes in #DV format.

But I have to say... This thing is a monster.

Can anyone recommend a laptop with #Firewire 800 that also runs Linux well?

#MARCHintosh
Worst case scenario is here…. Plugging anything into the second IDE bus stops the Mac from booting into the finder. It gets about half way, then locks up. I’m hoping I didn’t kill the Zip Drive, since the “click of death” rendered them so rare. It might be time for a BlueSCSI, or maybe it’s time to part this thing out.

I’m genuinely shocked that this thing made it to its 29th birthday.

So…. Just a reminder to all the folks working on #MARCHintosh - when tinkering inside your Macs and adding new stuff…. Don’t let random pins on the new equipment touch anything grounded.

I let the magic smoke out of an IDE -> CF adapter… and appear to have killed a 40GB drive… which is the best case scenario…. I hope I haven’t killed the IDE bus on my PowerMac G3.

Thankfully, it was a mostly empty data drive, not my boot disk with all my data.

So, planning on participating in #MARCHintosh this year -- broke my old #PowerMac #G3 out of storage, and it's sitting on my desk... But the only monitor I can find with a VGA socket doesn't have a power adapter... So that's the last missing piece...

The plan for this year is to back up the internal IDE drives to a CF->IDE adapter, then image the disks and throw them onto my backup server (ZFS zraid3!) for safekeeping. I have a 128GB CF card, but only 70GB of drives... So with the rest, I'll try and mirror some archives from MacintoshGarden, etc.

So, while clearing out my storage locker, I found a box of MiniDV tapes. I have two cameras, known to be working when they were put in storage about two years ago, but it’s probably time to get the video off the tapes before they deteriorate or the cameras stop working.

What’s the preferred #OpenSource #FOSS #Linux way of downloading copies of the data from tape? I think I have an old Mac Mini with a FireWire port, but I never liked the way iMovie chopped up the clips it downloaded.

The ‘Streisand effect' strikes again. The Late Show interview with James Talarico, which CBS kept from airing fearing the FCC, has 5.4 million views on YouTube. On a typical night about 2 million people tune in to watch Stephen Colbert. https://youtu.be/oiTJ7Pz_59A?si=a2Ie6j5wVIA4ZTFQ
