Cloud Computing Services Part 2: Google Cloud Platform

Introduction

Cloud computing has in modern day changed the use and importance of the information technology industry by offering scalable, reliable, and cost-effective services. These have been very instrumental in redefining the application of the internet especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Google cloud platform and Microsoft Azzure have been in the lead in provision of cloud management services. This comes in term of adoption and application of the services for personal and business use. This report aims to analyze the capabilities, key features and application of the Google Cloud Platform.

Google Cloud

The Google Cloud Platform, also referred to as the GCP, is a computing services provided by Google incorporation. Their cloud network provides a wide range of functionalities for their users which includes cloud computing, cloud storage, networking, machine learning, and Internet of Things (IoT). Notably, the platform also provides ana extra powerful computing service like GCE (Google Compute Engine) as well as other Cloud Functions that allow swift computing. Other solutions provided in the platform include data storage and database solutions. With the rise of artificial intelligence in the post covid era, the network has gone an extra effort to incorporate other services like cloud load balancing and virtual private network services for safer connections and management.

Findings

Generally, Google Cloud provides essential cloud computing solutions for businesses which have as a result made it one of most used cloud suites. For example, Google Cloud properly has much invested in artificial intelligence, analytics, and automation which have made it ideal for businesses focused on innovation and data processing. Meanwhile, Microsoft Azure has majored on seamless integration with Microsoft products like Microsoft 365 and other hybrid cloud solutions that have in the end made it a preferred choice specifically for enterprises requiring strong security and compliance features. Conclusively, depending on specific business needs, organizations may choose either platform or even adopt a multi-cloud strategy for enhanced flexibility.

Exploring Cloud Service Providers: Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure

Introduction

Cloud computing has transformed the IT industry by offering scalable, reliable, and cost-effective services. Among the leading cloud service providers, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Microsoft Azure stand out as two of the most comprehensive and widely used platforms. This document explores GCP’s capabilities, services, and key features.

Platform Description

The Google Cloud platform is a collection of cloud computing services that are provided by Google to provide a wide range of functionalities such as computing, storage, networking, machine learning, and Internet of Things for businesses and organizations. The platform is best known for its strong artificial intelligence capabilities, global network infrastructure, and independent automation options.

Cloud Compute Services

Compute services provided by Google cloud allow for virtualized processing power that can run applications and workloads in the cloud. The google compute engine (GCE) for example is specifically used to host virtual machines in the cloud. This independent feature allows for better and smoother processing, translating to speed and efficiency. The google cloud compute services further provides space for containerized applications through the Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and other cloud functions for users.

Deploying a Virtual Machine on Google Console

  • Logged in to the google cloud console cloud.
  • Navigated to the Compute Engine (GCP)
  • Created an ‘Instance’ and configured into the virtual machine. This included choosing the machine type, operating system, region and the preferred network settings.
  • Then went ahead to set the authentication methods to passwords.
  • Deployed the created instance and then verified its status.
  • Finally connected the instance to the virtual machine remotely using SSH provided by the console. (GCP) or RDP (Azure).
  • Run three test scripts and verified successful access.
  • Creating and Accessing a Storage Service in Google Console

  • Navigated to the Cloud Storage section on the main page.
  • Created a Storage Bucket (GCP)
  • Configured to the preferred settings including location, storage class, access control, and the encryption options.
  • Uploaded a few sample files for testing.
  • Set up the remote access controls and connected them to the database using the client tool.
  • Performed three read and write operations to verify the functionality of the storage service.
  • Setting up a Network Service in Google Console

  • Navigated to the Cloud Load Balancing in GCP main page.  
  • Created and defined the necessary parameters including the network name, region, and subnet settings.
  • Configured the security settings.
  • Deployed the network service and verified its connectivity.
  • Additional Platform Features

    Google AI and Machine Learning Services

    Google’s adoption of artificial intelligence in their cloud computing services has been very exceptional in helping businesses transform positively and enable them solve real world problems. The generative AI feature as we explored as an additional feature is very effective in summarizing large documents and extracting texts. For the sample data used in creating the storage sample in google cloud, we used the new AI/ML image processing pipeline to analyze and even generate alt texts where necessary.

    Notably, for more advanced users or business needs, the AI/ML features can create a chat based experienced that can be used to connect with clients in real time.

    Gemini for Google Cloud, found in the AI hub section of the console helps users to be more productive and creative. This is through the writing and coding assistant, creative designer, expert adviser and data analyst assistant. Additionally, the platforms Vertex AI solution has exceeded all expectations, in the data space by fine tuning all the AI/ML solutions to help businesses to maximize their return on investments.

    Generally, the AI/ML ensures that the pre-built solution fits just as well as a custom-built solution, reduces implementation training data and training times with Google’s pre-built AI solutions compared to starting from scratch and reduces risk by starting with a proven AI model foundation. The Google Cloud Translation API also translates content directly from audio, either audio files or streams, in 12 languages, and automatically generates punctuation. It can also translate content in over 120 languages hence the ability to be used by collaborating teams globally.

    Google Identity and Access Management (IAM) for user access control

    Google Identity and Access Management (IAM) is a service that allows you to control access to Google Cloud resources, ensuring that only the right individuals or systems have the appropriate level of access, based on the principle of least privilege. IAM is a cornerstone of security and access control on GCP, offering granular control over who can access what. A clear understanding and mindful implementation can significantly boost the security posture of your GCP resources.

    Google Cloud Functions for event-driven applications

    Google Cloud Functions provides a fully managed, event-driven execution environment that allows users to run code without provisioning or managing servers. These Functions are short-lived and trigger-based, meaning that they execute only when an event occurs, such as a file upload. Google Cloud Functions are among the best of the kind because of their deep integration with the entire Google Cloud ecosystem including Gmail, Google Drive and Google Documents. Additional services like Cloud Storage and Firebase, also allow users to respond to real-time events with minimal latency and maximum scalability. By leveraging Google Cloud Functions, businesses can therefore build applications that scale seamlessly, pay only for what they use, and integrate with a variety of other google services.

    Reflection/Conclusion

    Interaction with the Google Cloud console platform indicates that cloud computing has been very essential and productive for business. The platform has managed to provide powerful cloud computing solutions tailored to different needs in process providing for speed and efficiency.

    Comparing it to other platforms, Google Cloud console has a better design layout compared to Microsoft Azure which makes it more visual appealing and easier to use. The automation of most processes including auto fill and basic information integration also makes the platform more appealing, hence its popularity. Microsoft Azure however takes the lead in data analysis and interchange because of its ability to synchronize with Microsoft services including Microsoft 365. This integration has been especially important in setting up and using cloud storage and SQL data management.

    The biggest challenge experienced while working on the project were mainly the dashboard navigation of the Google Cloud Console. The service has a wide range of tools and plugins to be used in different case scenarios and with maximum customization. This means that new users may have to do more research to familiarize with the platform design and functionality. Google cloud console for example has a unique learning page that provides new users with quick tours, tips and learning courses provided for by google.   Another challenge we encountered while using both platform is the new artificial intelligence integration features. These were more confusing to me at first because my past experience with the platforms did not include the features. However, with research and some trial and era, we were able to acquaint with the features to the point where we were comfortable in using them. The new features are meant to guide users while also make their interaction with the platforms easier. For instance, Google Cloud has the ability to create sample files for VM testing as well as provide immediate responses on the help feature.

    Generally, Google Cloud is a high-end cloud solution for business and organizations globally. That provides developers with a powerful platform to build highly scalable, event-driven applications without the need to manage infrastructure. Its deep integration with Google’s cloud services, coupled with its ease of use and cost-efficiency, makes it a compelling choice for applications that require real-time responsiveness and automation. With the vast improvement of artificial intelligence, the use and efficiency of these platforms is expected to rise which may also need to more ease of use and further diversification in application.
