I recently read @djnavarro 's 2021 paper "If Mathematical Psychology Did Not Exist We Might Need to Invent It: A Comment on Theory Building in Psychology" (https://doi.org/10.1177/1745691620974769).

It's a gem on the role and use of theory in cognitive psychology (and related fields, by extension) and the relation of theory to statistics. As expected, the footnotes are a joy. For my extra reading pleasure, I imagined the paper written in Danielle's sweary-blog style.

If Mathematical Psychology Did Not Exist We Might Need to Invent It: A Comment on Theory Building in Psychology - Danielle J. Navarro, 2021

It is commonplace, when discussing the subject of psychological theory, to write articles from the assumption that psychology differs from the physical sciences...

An adversarial collaboration reports that mathematical reflection tests assess #math ability about as much as anything else. 😬

And what is the evidence that the paper's “independent” measure of reflection actually measured reflection? 🧐

I've been really confused looking at data that seem (to my eye) super similar to data we've collected in many previous experiments but statistically didn't replicate. I've been digging through my code trying to figure out if I've made a mistake.

Looks like there are maybe just some participants who are mashing buttons on Prolific? A small group with false alarm rates orders of magnitude more than previous experiments. Anyone else having issues?

ig #introductions.

I am a Compsci & Psych major, senior year, looking to go to grad school for #datascience next year (prospects looking good!). I love probabilistic modeling (still trying to distinguish it from ML tbh), but am very new to it all. I work in a #cogpsych lab right now, and doing a thesis project.

I also love saber #fencing and my dream rn is actually getting together prediction models of fencers, still debating whether I want to look into local or top champs. When I'm not fencing, I'm rock climbing. But uh, rn school is sapping all of my time and energy :(

Loving mastodon a decent amount, however, that might be because I'm pseudo-anonymous so I can spew my leftist bullshit :)

@emilynordmann I recently set a new kind of assignment for undergrads - inspired by systematic reviews, my #CogPsych students formed groups and evaluated one article each on #ReplicationReadiness and #WEIRDbias. Then the group proposes one #Replication to diversify our knowledge of humans 💪🏻💪🏽💪🏾

I’m working on getting insights into the wee ones before they get jaded by ‘the game’

Tackling WEIRD+ Bias in the undergraduate psychology curriculum

This archive contains teaching resources including lecture slides and teaching materials that help undergraduate students learn more about WEIRD+ bias in psychology (and other human-centered sciences), and develop a critical sense for the generalizability of published findings to a broad range of humans. Materials developed by Suzy J Styles in undergraduate teaching at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Hosted on the Open Science Framework
