You might be interested to know that #Bambu Lab recently claimed that setting a `User-Agent` in a specific way constituted a technological measure designed to circumvent an authorized access to their AGPLv3'd web service.

The AGPLv3 violations therein, of course, abound. But the `User-Agent` is the key? really?

‘Fuck you, Bambu’: How one private message could change the face of 3D printing

The open-source 3D printing community is lining up to fund a war against Bambu Lab, after it threatened a developer who modified its open-source code.

Published by the Free Software Foundation in 2007, it requires that any software built on an AGPLv3-licensed project must make its complete #sourcecode available under the same terms. Bambu has never made its source code available.

In one sense, this topic is incredibly niche, but on the other, it goes to show how #enshittification is the path of choice towards the place where You Own Nothing, that #Capital has chosen.

#Bambu makes what I’m told are the best #3d printers on the market. They built their code on an incredibly broad open source protocol. Many users built their own forks to allow for 3rd party hardware and filament. Bambu dominates the market. Then they pull an Adobe, force cloud integration, and start coming down on coders who built forks or workarounds. (Possibly overheating the machines with clumsy firmware code to block forks, although Rossmann is still testing that, iirc.)

The OpenSource community has thoughts.

Bambu Lab is abusing the open source social contract

Last year I said I'd probably never recommend another Bambu Lab printer again. I still use my P1S, but after Bambu Lab started pushing their always-connected cloud solution as the new default: I blocked the printer from the Internet via my OPNsense Firewall I stopped updating the firmware I locked the printer into Developer mode I deleted Bambu Studio and started using OrcaSlicer I had to do that to keep it under my control, instead of Bambu's.
