I'm still not out of the rabbit hole of searching for an #OpenSource #PersonalKnowledgeManagement software. 🐰

I'm gonna give a second try to @zettlr tomorrow! Their docs are *surprisingly* user-friendly and they claim to stick to the pure #CommonMark where probable. It's all the while being nice to researchers with citing, inline usage of #TeXLaTeX, #MermaidJS, and pop-over #footnotes. Provision of the simple #PDF export and #Pandoc customization are welcome, too!

But, to be fair, I may be overexaggerating how good #Zettlr is because of my recent disgust with #VendorLocking. In fact, almost anything that closely follows the common spec and is #FreeSoftware might suffice already. Having something as advanced and closer to the roots is certainly refreshing!

@mshelton or better: Look at your #IT #Refurbisher...

Chances are they have a ton of cheap #Lazer multifunction units for less than a full pack of #Ink needed to scan (!!!) with those shitty #Inkjet machines.
https://infosec.space/@OS1337/111822039091897824

Also don't just ditch #hp for printers, but also #PCs and #Laptops, because their #ProBook series of machines do #VendorLocking of #RAM and will refuse to boot without manually confirming by pressing F1 on the devices' keyboard every single bootup (!!!), bricking #PXE-Boot & #WakeOnLAN / #WoL in the process just to #FUD #customers and #IntependentRepair service providers!

The problem is in #IT that #WhatWeAllowIsWhatWillContinue and we allowed Corporations like #Apple to sprearhead the #Enshittification with #GluedInBatteries, #SolderedDownRAM, #SolderedDownSSDs and #AntiRepairDesign!

The only winning move is to refuse to buy such shit!!

Get a @frameworkcomputer and a @fairphone / #Fairphone if #BuyUsed & #UseLonger isn't an option, because in #capitalism, your reciept is your vote - EVERY SINGLE TIME!

@[email protected] #WhatsMissing: An #OpenSource #Printer Design that can do if not #LED / "#Laser" at least #Inkjet with COTS gylcol-based #ink that doesn't dry up. After all, there are tons of #OpenSourced #3Dprinters on the market, so doing #2Dprinter shoudln't be that hard... All it needs to to is spit #PDF|s on paper! The only reason I still use my #Deskjet6122 is because it refuses to die, it works flawless on #Linux and both ink and 3rd party cartridges are so cheap, it's not worth biting the bullet and buy a chonky Xerox multifunction lazer because it would've to also replace the #OfficejetJ4150 that I still use for scanning... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHX6tHdQGiQ #ItAintBrokeDontReplaceIt #UseLonger #Printers #2Dprinting #Printing #RightToRepair #Reuse

@stanford yeah, all professional laptops like #Dell Latitude, #hp #ProBook.and #Lenovo #ThinkPad do #VendorLocking on #WiFi and #WWAN cards for way over a decade now...

Stanford :fedora: (@[email protected])

So, for everyone who is interested, yes Lenovo also has vendor locking on their Laptops. https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/x6hjan/1802_unauthorized_network_card_after_installing_a/ Dug into the general topic a bit more and it looks like laptop manufactures are somewhat forced to do that on WIFI/WWAN cards to meet FCC regulations. Some even need to provide laptop specific drivers so they can target specific SAR levels, as they can vary even with the same card in different laptop lines due to line specific antennas and their placement. @[email protected]

@stanford 'The only #VendorLocking I've seen are on #WiFi & #WWAN #cards being #whitelisted in terms of PCI-ID and MAC-Adress/IMEI number...

The only company that does #VendorLocking on #RAM is #hp with their #ProBooks, bricking #PXE-Boot in the process...

I had a work-issued #ThinkPad #P15v and that thing never complained about me swapping the 256GB NVMe for a pair of 1TB Crucial P1's...

I've never heard of #VendorLocking of #SSDs outside of #Apple devices...

HP covers printer's USB port with warning sticker to make sure you don't go right ahead and use it | Boing Boing

HP wants you to print things through its cloud service, wherein you pay a subscription fee for ink and your usage is routed through its servers. To encourage you to do this, it covers the USB port …

@lamp depends...

Some (mobile) Servers & Workstations do #VendorLocking of #PCIe - devices to comply with shitty FCC regulations and deny 3rd party WiFi & WWAN cards to be installed.

#HP even does #VendorLocking in #RAM in their #Laptops, and FUDs people with false alarms every bootcycle that they've to confirm on the physical keyboard, purposefully breaking #WakeOnLAN and rebooting remotely in the process!

Yeah, #VendorLocking of #Consumeable & upgradeable parts like #HDD|s, #SSD|s and espechally #RAM is just a big asshole move.

And no, it's not less bad just because others besides #Apple do...

Same with soldering-down of RAM & SSDs!
