@reiddragon with any #ThinkPad, #ProBook, #Latitude device the only way to yeet that is with #Aftermarket - #Firmware like #Skulls / #Heads.

I rescued a HP #ProBook 440 g3 from the landfill. I first installed #Kubuntu 26.04 with a 1 TB HHD. #KDE looked slick and performed decent on it, but only 4GB of RAM caused it to hang too often. So I switched it to a 60GB SSD with #Ubuntu #MATE 24.04 and it performs well enough, it doesn't fly but it will do. Wish I could see how Windows was running on this about 14 year old laptop to compare. Man I love open source, getting to save tech for a few more years.

@purple I hate some #hp #ProBook|s due to an annoying #VendorLock on #RAM:

  • If you use non hp-#branded (SPD-EEPROM) Sticks it'll brick #unattended boots & -reboots, necessitating a press if the F1 key on the device EVERY SINGLE TIME…

@adisonverlice in fact, professional Laptops like #ThinkPad, #ProBook and #Latitude lineups don't store the password in the CMOS-backed settings but the flash so even if one replaces/removes the coin cell the system won't unlock unless the BIOS password is known.

  • They also prevent brute-forcing it with lockups after a set amount of times (3-10) and the manufacturer will only restore it if one has the paoer trail from original purchase to current owner or they'll send it back to the original buyer with the details of the one requesting service so in case someone tries to get stolen assets unlocked, they can get legal involved.

Obviously locking down corporate and/or educational IT is done intentional fir good reasons: Neither businesses nor schools want people to fuck around with their IT assets.

  • And that's just regular ITsec, not even counting for sensitive areas, businesses, industry or otherwise...

There's a reason devices like #Chromebooks or the #SecureBook6 exist.

Neuer Rechner, neuer Start. Was liegt da näher, als gleich mal den Umstieg von einer herkömmlichen Festplatte auf eine SSD zu machen. Eine SSD hat die schnelleren Zugriffszeiten, weil sie prinzipiell so funktioniert wie der Arbeitsspeicher eines PC. Es gibt keine beweglichen Teile und keine Magnetplatte. Programme und Daten werden also wesentlich schneller geladen. Gerade wenn der Rechner neu ist, macht der Umstieg gefühlt die wenigsten Probleme. Man muss sowieso Programme installieren und persönliche Daten auf den Rechner kopieren. Hier nun die Vorbereitung und eine Schritt für Schritt Anleitung für den Einbau einer SSD in ein HP ProBook 450 G3.

#Nachhaltigkeit: Ein HP probook #430G2 von 2014 funkt auch mit #ac8265 (habe wegen OS-Abhängigkeit da keine Wifi6-Hardware eingebaut). Zweiter WLAN-Hardwaretausch für diese Maschine. Auf eine weiterhin nützliche Existenz!
