Why Rest Doesn’t Restore You Anymore

Most high performers are good at adapting. They move through pressure, disruption, and change without breaking. What they are less good at is restoring. And over time, that gap has a cost. This post explores the difference between adaptation and true resilience — and what the return to yourself actually requires.

Betrayal freezes your nervous system in fear. But your vagus nerve is still capable of waking up to radical, unconditional love. Healing is physical. Full episode available now. #SomaticHealing #VagusNerve #TraumaThrive

Your heart does more than pump blood.

Science now shows the heart and brain constantly communicate through the vagus nerve, affecting stress, healing, focus, sleep, and emotions.

HeartMath training helps improve nervous system balance and heart-brain coherence naturally.

We now offer in-office HeartMath sessions and HRV testing at Back to Life Chiropractic.

Dear readers,
I've been asked quite a few times recently why I actually went to the trouble of writing this book and this novel. ■It was a deep, personal desire of mine to point out, and make unequivocally clear, that these complex illnesses exist in our society and that they are barely acknowledged by conventional medicine.

Hecking blood sugar is not coming down so well, fluctuating some and no lower than 6.4. I could do without medication side effects, but might have to try again. Even then, only the lowest dose was tolerable.

My cortisol, sleep and reading of upsetting news aren’t helping. I was trying to improve those, but idk how much my supplements and muting of news sources is helping.

Waiting on an endocrinology appointment which is likely to be months especially since I asked for the local place. I’m not so up for the travelling these days.

Used the Pulsetto (calming vagus nerve device) for the first time in two weeks and the high setting for 20 minutes was a bit much in the end. It flared something up as it was actually helping it, but in the meantime I felt ugh. Once it passed, I could feel the benefit, but still, whoops.

Once I started using the Pulsetto vagus nerve device, my morning droop went from being horribly achy and bleh to just tired and hungry. Which is annoying, but much better.

Taking my sugar reading first thing, though, it can take a while to get to making breakfast, and I feel so much better afterwards. The hot chocolate helps that bit more too. I bought the cacao powder from PeakSupps this time rather than NutriSeed and it seems more bitter, or I didn’t put enough coconut milk powder in. It smells amazing, though.

Lowest reading of all mornings today too, I was very happy with 6.2. It’s better for having eaten something later (4.30am since sleep is that short). Though I hear it’s better to leave the liver for longer 🤷🏻‍♀️

Feeling that much more awake today. I was so tired yesterday after a really good 30 seconds. No joke, that‘s how it goes sometimes. Feel good when I wake up and then droop.

Haven’t needed to lie down or sleep much today, usually needing until 5pm to feel awake. I listened to some sleep music last night since sleeping a little during the day left me restless at night, and it helps sleep deeper, if not longer (still not much clearing four hours). It’s dehydrating, though.

The Pulsetto vagus nerve device is still doing a good job and I felt more alert after using it yesterday. It does something I wasn’t expecting, though - in relaxing my brain, I feel sort of lower, less up in my head, less able to get into my imagination and I don’t like the feeling. I hadn’t realised that’s a not-relaxed thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

I tried my favourite ADHD focus music and it worked pretty well at sharpening me up again.

The article discusses how stimulating the vagus nerve might protect the brain from Alzheimer’s disease by supporting the health of the locus coeruleus, a key brain region involved in alertness, memory, and norepinephrine production. It reviews how tau buildup in this area may precede Alzheimer’s symptoms and how vagus nerve stimulation could help regulate its activity to support cognitive function.

This topic is of interest to psychology readers because it connects brain networks, neurotransmitter systems, and aging to memory and thinking processes, highlighting how interventions targeting neural regulation could influence cognitive health.
