When Asking Too Many Questions Undermines Your Leadership

Although it’s widely accepted that good leaders are good learners, a learning mentality can also have a darker side. If not carefully managed, it might lead to a perception of decreased effectiveness, less expertise, and lower efficiency. Your learning mentality should be the catalyst for your personal growth and development — not a reason for others to question your leadership. For your inquisitiveness to be viewed as an asset, it should be perceived not just as mere learning, but as a way to gather knowledge, add value, communicate effectively, and make decisions quickly. The author offers five strategies to ensure your stakeholders’ perception of you aligns with your intentions.

Federal law requires campaigns to disclose their spending, including itemized details of their vendors, as a safeguard against #corruption and in the interest of #transparency.
But as in many aspects of #campaign #finance #law, campaigns have found "workarounds", and the body that oversees such regulations, the Federal Election Commission, is perpetually hamstrung by partisan #deadlock.

Campaign finance experts said that among increasingly #brazen moves by political candidates, Mr. Scott’s new financial disclosures stood out as exhibit A.
“This practice completely #undermines the federal campaign finance #disclosure #requirements,” said Paul S. Ryan, a campaign finance expert. “The public has a right to know how political committees are spending donor dollars.”

Social media injunction unravels plans to protect 2024 elections

A July 4 #injunction that places extraordinary #limits on the #government’s #communications with tech companies #undermines initiatives to harden social media companies against #election #interference, civil rights groups, academics and tech industry insiders say.

After companies and the federal government spent years expanding efforts to combat online falsehoods in the wake of Russian interference on the platforms during the 2016 election, the ruling is just the latest sign of the pendulum swinging in the other direction.

Tech companies are #gutting their #content #moderation #staffs, researchers are pulling back from studying disinformation and key government communications with Silicon Valley are on pause amid unprecedented political scrutiny.

With voting in the 2024 primaries just months away, tech companies also are facing new #election #threats as leaps in #artificial #intelligence give bad actors new tools to create fake videos, photos and ads.

Move by Tennessee Republicans to oust 3 Dem lawmakers startles state

What’s unfolding in the Tennessee State Capitol, where Republican leaders want to #expel three #Democrats over participation in a #protest demanding new #gun-#safety laws, is extraordinary for its political #brazenness and #scope.

“It will echo across the country. I think it will have a #chilling effect on all states where there’s supermajorities or very red states,” Rep. Gloria Johnson, one of the Democrats under threat of expulsion, said in a phone interview Tuesday.

“This is chipping away at our #democracy, there’s no question, because everybody’s going to wonder, ‘am I next?’”

The ACLU in Tennessee also issued a warning the effort “#undermines Democracy.”

“Expulsion is an extreme measure that is used very infrequently in our state and our country because it strips voters of representation by the people they elected,” Kathy Sinback, the executive director of the ACLU in Tennessee, said in a statement.
