Job opportunity: Systems Engineer- Grade 15 at Alma Observatory
The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) is seeking an experienced systems engineer to join the Systems Engineering Group, part of the ALMA Director’s Office (ADO). Systems Engineering is a transdisciplinary and integrative approach to enable the successful realization, use, and retirement of engineered systems, using systems principles and concepts, and scientific, technological, and management methods. The selected candidate will contribute to the success of the exciting new period for the observatory, in which the regular stable operation must be efficiently combined with changes related to the ALMA 2030 Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade (WSU), obsolescence upgrades and other observatory projects. The selected candidate will support processes related to problem reporting and investigation, including root-cause analysis, chairing Material Review Board (MRB) processes, processing of non-conformances and carrying out related technical analyses, coordinating upgrade proposals and supporting development gate reviews, contributing to ensure configuration and change control of the ALMA system, preparing periodic or on-demand key performance indicator reports, among other related duties as assigned. The successful candidate will be working in an international, multi-disciplinary team, and will be based at the ALMA Santiago Central Office (SCO) in Vitacura, although a certain amount of duty travel (up to 50% of time) to the ALMA Operation Support Facility (OSF) near San Pedro de Atacama is expected.Support System Engineering processes for ALMA development projects, including gate reviews.Participate in the Assembly, Integration, Verification and Commissioning process of the development projects. Participate in the Product Assurance/Quality Assurance efforts in the Observatory. As such, collaborate with colleagues for the correct and consistent implementation of configuration management, change-control processes, KPIs, and metrics elaboration.Maintain and update the ALMA system documentation, in particular the System Block Diagrams, Product Tree, and ICD registry.Chair and follow up on Material Review Boards (MRBs) to resolve non-conformances.Guide projects, sub-projects and/or developments, perform on-demand analysis and prepare summary reports.Guide the acceptance of hardware, firmware and software deliverables from the ALMA Executives or their partners to JAO.Organize and participate in technical reviews.Contribute to the definition, verification and validation of technical requirements.Other related duties as assigned.WORKING CONDITIONS Duty Station: mainly at SCO office (Vitacura, Santiago) in 5x2 shift, with frequent travel to the OSF (San Pedro de Atacama, Antofagasta) on a 4x3 shift. In the case of OSF, the transportation to and from designated pick-up points is provided.Willingness to travel overseas for short periods for meetings, training, etc. is required.Work is typically performed in a research or development environment, both indoors and outdoors.The position may require work near moving mechanical parts and/or electrical equipment.Occasionally physical activity such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching may be required.Work may be performed in high altitude conditions (from 3000 to 5000 m over the sea level).Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color, and depth perception.Must pass High-Altitude Medical Exam for work at high altitude.Deadline for applications: Friday, January 17th, 12:00 pm, Chile time.
