The U.S. aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, engaged in operations against Iran, has arrived in Greece at a base on the island of Crete. The warship, with over 5,000 sailors aboard and more than 75 military aircraft, is stationed at the NATO Souda Bay base. The warship has been deployed for nine months, participating in operations against Venezuela in the Caribbean before arriving in the Middle East.

Here are the graves of the Commonwealth soldiers, sailors, and airmen who were killed during the hopelessly mismanaged Battle of Crete (May, 1941). All the graves look out to the sea...

Their German counterparts (who won, after a disastrous start) are buried a short distance away at Maleme, overlooking the airport, possession of which was crucial to the battle's outcome.
