Here are the graves of the Commonwealth soldiers, sailors, and airmen who were killed during the hopelessly mismanaged Battle of Crete (May, 1941). All the graves look out to the sea...

Their German counterparts (who won, after a disastrous start) are buried a short distance away at Maleme, overlooking the airport, possession of which was crucial to the battle's outcome.
