In commemoration of the Holocaust Remembrance Day, here is the proclamation of the central committee of the Jewish Labor Bund, made on May 1, 1943, in the besieged Warsaw Ghetto:

"Comrades! Notwithstanding the terrible tragedy and suffering which we, the surviving remnants, have endured in the terrible past, and which we continue to endure in the concentration camps, prisons, forests and other places, we do not indulge in lamentations. True to the great commands of life we must be active, and, within the limits of our modest forces, we will continue to be active. In keeping with our glorious tradition, we are bound to the working people of Poland and other lands through our common destiny in the common struggle against our common enemy for our common ideals of liberty. These ideals are today the slogans and the postulates of our common labor holiday, the First of May."

May the cause of world socialism, of human right and human gain, prevail. A better world is possible and it's now up to us to pave the road to it.

I'm in Belgium this weekend. The reasons for this aren't really relevant.

Tonight I went to the Menin Gate for the first time, to witness the Last Post - a ceremony that's been done at 8pm local time since the memorial was built, excepting during WW2.

I cried. There are 54000 names on the Gate, none of them have a known grave, and every night their lives and loss are commemorated. This is astonishingly powerful.

I also drank beer, but that's not important right now.
