If you're a Windows user of FastSM and getting error 41 (unsupported format) when trying to play YouTube audio, here's the fix!

FastSM has full VLC support built in, but the Python VLC bindings aren't bundled in the Windows installer. Without them, it silently falls back to BASS audio, which can't handle WebM/Opus streams from YouTube.

The fix is simple:
Install VLC if you haven't alreadyRun: pip install python-vlc --target Copy the vlc.py file from that folder into C:\Program Files\FastSM_internal\Restart FastSM
YouTube audio will now route through VLC and work perfectly. Note: you'll need to redo this after FastSM updates. Hopefully @mewproj will include the missing .py file in the next release so it just works right out of the box. I've also created an issue on GitHub at https://github.com/masonasons/FastSM/issues/49

VLC Python bindings missing from Windows installer · Issue #49 · masonasons/FastSM

Summary On Windows, VLC_AVAILABLE is always False despite VLC being installed, because the python-vlc bindings package (vlc.py) is not included in the PyInstaller bundle. This causes YouTube audio ...

Your screen reader does not have to read everything at full detail all the time. JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack all let you adjust verbosity settings to reduce what gets announced. Turn off punctuation announcements for casual reading, then turn them back on when editing. Tuning verbosity for the task you are doing saves a lot of mental energy.

It is very refreshing and interesting that @hartgenconsult Leasey features and controls are slowly transitioning from the classic jaws scripts approach to application interfaces and programming. That means it is completely possible for Leasey to make it screen reader agnostic. Let's hope so that even other screen readers say from the NVDA universe get to benefit from Leasey.

If you are #blind and still use #irc there's a new adispeak release for you! This one includes the latest adiirc beta, with the fixed and fully accessible settings and server list. It also includes sounds thanks to @FreakyFwoof. If you've never heard of adispeak, it's a script to make adiirc read out IRC messages, in the spirit of sjams or mircspeech, but supporting #NVDA, and based on a more modern IRC client. Doing a ton of accessibility work on my iOS app, with a particular focus on VoiceOver navigation at the moment. I want to have something I can be incredibly proud of on release, and looking forward to doing some user testing for it all soon!

One ask: Finch needs more sounds. If you design sound and this seems like a fun thing to contribute to, I would love to hear from you.

Your browser does a hundred small things a day and tells you about almost none of them. Finch gives it a voice.

It plays a short, distinct sound the moment something happens: open a tab, finish a download, load a page, save a bookmark. Each one gets its own brief, recognizable sound.

The name fits: finches are songbirds, and you tell the species apart by their calls.

So. I think I'm heading into an ms-dos/old windows kick again. What's the current state of accessibility for screen-reader users of dos/early windows? Anything more updated than the old talking dosbox package? Have people tested with the newer dosbox-x, for example? How about a program like com2com on a windows 11 system? Emulating a bns, dectalk or other serial synth with a modern synth? What's the state of play these days. #Retro #Accessibility #MsDos #Talking #screenReader
