The Art Of Vintage Computing (at VCF So. Cal 2026)

Before high speed networks were everywhere, “sneakernet” ruled. The concept was simple: copy files onto a floppy disk or other removable media, then physically walk it over to another computer. It was slow, but it was also universal, with no drivers or complex protocols to fight with. In schools, offices, and even underground hacker circles, sneakernet was the default way to pass programs, cracked software, or personal projects from one system to another. Even today, the idea lives on in moving huge datasets with hard drives shipped across the world, because sometimes "walking" still beats bandwidth.

In 1978 our 'little' Gould SEL minis had 32767 words of memory (32-bit words), plus a FPS vector processor (think rudimentary GPU, but for signal processing) with its own 32k words of memory, with an 80Mb hard drive the size of a washing machine. Hanging off all that were the usual tape drives, card reader, line printer, and so on.

The 'pipelined microcode' used in the FPS box was the most fun I've ever had at or near machine-code level, as you could do multiple instructions per clock as long as you primed the pipeline before and remembered to empty it after.

Happy bloody days.

Was going through old physical photos, weeding out all the old 'nameless landscape and mountain' shots, prints with people on them that I now have no recollection of.... etc, as one does at this time of year.

Found this interesting one - that's my desk at work back in '96. The IBM tower behind the desk was the TV station's web server. The hardware stack on top was the ISDN connection to our ISP. At that time, local ISP's didn't offer web hosting of the kind we wanted/needed.

If you want a giggle, check out the Wayback Machine snapshot of the site.

Heh, the system specs:
'Our webserver is an IBM PC Server 320 with 3 gigabytes of hard disk space, 156 megabytes of RAM, running on an Intel Pentium 90mhz processer (with the ability to upgrade to dual Pentiums).'
