Hivemapper Dashcam HDC S
Model: HDC-S-0HE1-001
S/N: HDCS 807

Well, this is an “interesting” device, I grabbed it from ewaste thinking this could be a good webcam or security camera. And it is, in a way – a dashcam that they supposedly paid you in cryptocurrency to drive around while this documented the scenery and road. In short, some custom hardware for mapping roads as you drive, so you can earn their custom cryptocurrency which has devalued. These HDC-S models are recently EOL, and are not recognized in windows or OS X (I have not tried Linux or BSD). They are listed for stupid money on eBay, but I was unable to get them to work for anything.

Oh sure, let's all pretend it's 1996 again and set up a dial-up ISP with a Raspberry Pi in 2026 🙄. Because nothing says cutting-edge technology like paying homage to the golden era of 56K modems and screaming phone lines 📞🔊. Next up: how to use a Commodore 64 to stream TikToks, because we're all about #innovation here! 💾🚀

Build your own Dial-up ISP with a Raspberry Pi

Last year my aunt let me add her original Tangerine iBook G3 clamshell to my collection of old Macs1. It came with an AirPort card—a $99 add-on Apple made that ushered in the Wi-Fi era. The iBook G3 was the first consumer laptop with built-in Wi-Fi antennas, and by far the cheapest way to get a computer onto an 802.11 wireless network.

That is over 40 years ago, so it should qualify for retro tech 😁 In 1985 we started giving computer classes at the local community college using about half a dozen Olivetti M24.
And there’s a fun story involving a defunct phone booth and California also: https://www.arminhanisch.de/2025/10/calling-peter-norton-en/
