Day 8 of 30 Days of Local Food: Mi Tienda Latina

Open for more than twenty years, Mi Tienda Latina is one of Waterloo Region’s first Hispanic grocers. While you can get what you want to make your favourite Latin dishes at home, their kitchen scratch-cooks favourite traditional foods, the way the abuelas do. They started with pupusas, and now their menu includes pastelitos and empanadas, tacos, pescado frito, and sopa de res.

Mi Tienda Latina: 103 Ontario Street South, Kitchener,

Recipes from Latin America

I grew up in Venezuela, where family and food are the centers of everything. My abuelita (grandmother) collected recipes from Syria, Britain, and Venezuela, and my extended family exposed me to dishes and flavors from across South America. We would cook together, exchanging stories as we molded masa. On school days we would run to find the chichero waiting for us with a big vat of chicha (a sweet spiced rice drink). Here’s a taste of the food I grew up with and still cook today. — Janette Speyer

So very sad to learn my favorite restaurant in Dallas closed. I discovered it within a year of its opening, right after I moved to Dallas.
The chicken gaucho torta on a popover, chicken aljibe, cuatro leches cake & caipirinhas were all to die for.
