One of the reasons why Australian producers moved so heavily to Stelvin closures in the late 90's and '00s was that the quality of the corks that they were able to procure was atrocious (so I've been told).

To wit, trying to open (very gently) this bottle of Lindemans Muscat from the late 80's tonight and it crumbled at the slightest little tug. 20 minutes later and it was (mostly) out of the bottle.

But worth the effort! Absolutely gorgeous stuff waiting inside! #muscat #fortified #wine
