Agi: Akrotiri, l'ex colonia britannica ancora sotto Sua Maestà

Installazioni militari e compiti strategici
Akrotiri e Dhekelia ospitano entrambi importanti installazioni militari.

Akrotiri, the former British colony still under Her Majesty.

AGI - The sovereign area of Akrotiri in Cyprus, where the British base struck in the night by an Iranian drone is located, is together with Dhekelia the last fragment of what was the British Empire’s colonial territory. Officially named ‘Akrotiri and Dhekelia Sovereign Base Areas’, the 250 kilometers of surface are the only overseas territory of the Crown. Although officially they have a single name, the two areas are located in different parts of the island: Akrotiri to the north, near Limassola, and Dhekelia to the southeast, near Larnaca and the buffer zone that divides the Greek from the Turkish part.

Great Britain, which had transferred control of Cyprus to the Ottoman Empire in 1878, was able to maintain sovereignty over the two strategic zones, for its presence in the Mediterranean, thanks to the treaties of Zurich and London, with which in 1960 Cyprus ratified its independence. Those who signed them were not only the United Kingdom and Cyprus, but also Greece, Turkey and the representative of the Turkish-Cypriot community.

Military Installations and Strategic Tasks

Akrotiri and Dhekelia both host important military installations. Akrotiri is an Air Force base and is central to operations in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Dhekelia hosts a British army garrison and has key tasks of signal intelligence, known as Sigint, and surveillance.

The overseas territory has approximately 18,000 inhabitants, of which 11,000 are Cypriots and the rest are British military personnel, according to the latest figures of slightly more than 2,300, and their families.
