La presidente del Consiglio ha condiviso sui social il momento dello scambio, definendo il dolce "very, very good", mentre i media indiani hanno subito letto il gesto come un richiamo ironico al tormentone "Melodi", fusione dei cognomi Meloni e Modi diventata virale sui social indiani.
Le Melody non sono però un semplice dolcetto. Toffee al caramello con ripieno al cioccolato prodotte da Parle, storico marchio indiano di biscotti e confetteria, sono per il Paese asiatico quello che per noi potrebbero essere i baci Perugina o i gianduiotti Caffarel.
Il loro slogan più celebre, "Melody itni chocolaty kyun hai?", cioè "perché Melody è cosi' cioccolatosa?", è entrato da anni nell'immaginario pubblicitario del Paese.
Il valore del regalo sta anche nella storia del marchio. Parle nasce a Mumbai, nel quartiere di Vile Parle, negli anni Venti, in un contesto legato al movimento swadeshi, cioè alla promozione della produzione indiana contro la dipendenza dai prodotti stranieri. L'azienda fu fondata per competere con la confetteria europea e divenne nel tempo sinonimo di dolci dal gusto marcatamente indiano, con prodotti come Kismi, Poppins, Mango Bite, Rola Cola e appunto Melody.
Per questo la confezione consegnata a Meloni può essere letta come un oggetto di soft power, un frammento di cultura popolare riconoscibile da milioni di indiani.

For this reason, the package delivered to Meloni can be read as an object of soft power, a fragment of popular culture recognizable by millions of Indians.
