"It’s very difficult to have a general sense of Jews as ordinary people who are part of the country’s population. Many people have an image frozen in time of Jews as the victims of the Nazis, who were the parents or grandparents of many Germans.

"In some cases, this leads to an over-compensation which means that people want to have a particularly favourable idea of Jews. They make a point of doing what they think is supporting Jews. Including supporting Israel, going on holiday in Israel, or cultivating connections to Israel thinking this somehow revives Jewishness."

The German state has bound its own re-birth into the “realm of civilized nations” through a particular protective relationship with the figure of the Jew, where (always Jewish) Israelis are a prime embodiment of Jewish life.
