Dianthus is surprisingly hardy. But I probably should bring it inside for the dreadfully forecasted -24Β°C night, right?

Out of ~80 new #ColdHardy #avocado seeds germinating in the greenhouse this winter, today we have the first emergence of a top sprout! This is #No255, a seedling of #Aravaipa:
Now that it's been relatively warm over the last couple weeks, it looks like at least one of the outside trees is starting budswell a bit earlier than ideal. This is the #Aravaipa #avocado seedling (#No138) that has thus far been the most #ColdHardy seedling in our project, which was covered with a tree cover for the December freeze, but still showed the least damage of any covered seedlings.
Another La Niña winter, another late December hard freeze. This time a few of the trees had a bit of protection, and it seems to have helped some of them. Here's a summary of some of the apparent survivors...🧡

@jblue I somehow missed this post before! I only dabble in most types of #gardening but I've been interested in zone pushing #ColdHardy #subtropical #FruitTrees for awhile, and that led me to organize the #avocado breeding project this account is focused on. It's a long shot, but I'm hoping we can find or produce avocado trees able to survive and maybe even flourish here in the #pnw #cascadia
With the forecast showing once-in-a-decade levels of #cold over the next few days, we've covered up a few of the most promising #ColdHardy #avocado trees planted outside. Here's one that's protected and one that's not so lucky just behind it:

#ShellingPeas after they got snowed on over Sunday night, and the sun melted most of the snow by Monday afternoon, when I took this picture.

Bless their cold-enduring little roots, there were still a few blossoms on the tops. #ColdHardy
