A new model of human population and resource usage estimates that population will peak at 11.7-12.4 billion people between 2067 and 2076. Resource replenishment capacity was estimated to be exceeded in 1970. The estimated maximum sustainable population is estimated as 2.5 billion (as in 1950).

Humanity has already exceeded Earth’s limits, study warns

Humanity may already be living far beyond what Earth can sustainably support, according to a sweeping new study analyzing more than 200 years of population and environmental data. Researchers found that while population growth once fueled innovation and expansion, the trend shifted decades ago as the planet’s resources became increasingly strained.

> Now that humans have overshot the carrying capacity of the planet, collapse is inevitable no matter what we do.

Yes, I think it's exactly like that, no matter what Elon Musk and others of his school of thought may say. "Funny" how they insist on not seeing the material input required to sustain the current civilization, not to mention its exponential growth (growth required by the Capitalist system)

“The 7 Fundamental Drivers of Overshoot” by Nate Hagens

How growing consumption is pushing Earth beyond its carrying capacity

This is a refinement of a previous “Frankly” episode, in the form of an essay. I think it’s very useful to learn concepts such as the carbon pulse, overshoot and carrying capacity, the economic superorganism, the effect of addiction to dopamine (in a brain designed and fine-tuned for an environment very different than our current one in cities, and western culture)… As Nate says: there is no solution because there is no problem; instead, we face a predicament with maybe different outcomes.

The Great Simplification

@Pampa Yes, it is a remote dream. I am expecting #CivilisationCollapse by 2040 and that my child and grandchild will not have a habitable planet because I too do not think the things that are needed to avoid it are going to happen. However, if I allow this dystopian view to dominate my thoughts I will be so depressed that I will not be able to enjoy the rest of my life, so, I do what I can to reduce the damage and prepare for the worst.

I am, therefore, what is known as an #OptimisticDoomer, as opposed to an out and out #Doomer who has simply given up in face of the overwhelming evidence of the #overshoot of #PlanetaryLimits and so Planetary #CarryingCapacity.

@Climatehistories In his book Overshoot, "...Catton is making a _positive_ argument for change, rather than misanthropic framework to label our predicament"

and once our predicament is understood, we can then agree and take action.

Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change

Though, ‘Overshoot’, is ostensibly a book about biophysical limits, the theme that runs through it is about the human propensity for denying obvious facts: Our ability to deceive not only others, but more importantly, ourselves.
