Merci @blablalinux

For offline text natural language translation, argostranslate is a super easy to use python tool:

Can someone explain to me the relation and/or difference between #argostranslate and #libretranslate ? It seems they were started or maintained by the same person at some point?

Before I forget, helm chart also now has autogenerated docs, and as a bonus, because I cannot help myself, I wrote a quick  Argo CD Application to deploy an LibreTraslate ApplicationSet:

Since the LibreTranslate helm chart hasn't been updated in 2 years, I recently forked it and made some quality of life changes, including allowing you to set a default API key from an existing k8s Secret, automatic release notes, using existing Persistent Volume Claims and a few more little updates that I think you'll find useful if you're a regular k8s user. Oh, and the docker image is also kept up to date by Renovate Bot, so it should always stay up to date

@jerry This seems like a good thread for my security concern.

I noticed a “translate” link on my post. Clicked it to see what would be used. Was disturbed to find that it’s #DeepL. This is a Tor-hostile #Cloudflare site that misleads people into thinking security is taken seriously. Which is the same thing that happends with libretranslate.com.

In principle it’d be most secure to run Argos Translate on the server. But that’s also a heavy process. If translation must be outsourced, I suggest translate.fedilab.app. It’s the same engine as #libretranslate, but without sharing translations with CF.

(edit) guess it’s a good time to republish this:

#GoogleTranslate (#PRISM)
#YandexTranslate [tax(profits) →Putin’s war]
#DeepL (shares sensitive txt w/tech giant; misleads ppl about it)
#LibreTranslate.com (shares sensitive txt w/tech giant; no privacy policy; solicits trust w/buzz phrases “libre”, “free & open”)
🤷 #lingva.ml (FOSS frontend; still Google)
🤷 translate.fedilab.app (no privacy policy but no evidence of mishandling data either)

Running locally:
#ArgosTranslate
#Apertium.org
#translatelocally.com (EU funded)

@fsf IIRC it was suggested yrs ago that FSF mark #Github & #Gitlab.com links with an anti-feature indicator linking to FSF’s repo eval page. Still no progress. FSF also directs visitors to Cloudflare websites which are /disrespectful/ of people’s freedom, while neglecting to even warn people. E.g. docs for #ArgosTranslate. I will not be directly involved under these circumstances.
