Today is day 10 of the LGBTQ alphabet series: Wrapping up with a number and a letter to represent indigenous people.

2S is for Two-Spirit.

While the term Two-Spirit or 2S is relatively new, Two-Spirit people have always been part of North American Indigenous culture. They are part of the Queer community and deserve acceptance and respect everywhere.

The general understanding is that "Two-Spirit" as a pan-tribal umbrella term came into being at an inter-tribal gathering in Winnipeg in 1990. The term is meant to honor diverse traditional gender roles within Indigenous cultures before European contact.

For Indigenous people and allies, de-colonization is more than history. It is seeing past Western concepts of the male/female binary and embracing one's true self as understood by one's heritage.

Why are so many Canadian Jews seemingly ungrateful about Prime Minister Carney's antisemitism speech? Because it left a lot to be desired, and many want to see action, rather than careful words. Specifically:

- The speech was months too late. As Jews are beaten on the streets, synagogues and schools shot up, the Prime Minister has been silent
- The speech was given in a synagogue, not in the House of Parliament
- The Prime Minister did not use words like Zionism, Israel, or speak to any other pointed issue. He danced around it, which mirrors the exact silence Canadian Jews experience in "polite society"
- The Prime Minister did not answer questions, nor respond to them when asked outside the podium

This podcast covers not just these arguments but deeper issues around Jewishness in Canada, and whether it's safe to remain here. I urge Canadian non-Jews to please listen to this and be allies.

Let's have some real talk about antisemitism, antizionism, Israel, etc.

If you think "It's a real shame what's happening to the Jews." but you don't chime in when someone says "But Israel" or "But Zionism" or "It's understandable" or any of those things because you "don't want to get involved", ask yourself if you'd feel the same way if we replaced Jews with another group. If someone in your social circle said something about gay people, or trans people, black people, immigrants, or Muslims, would you say something?

Speaking up is about making the society you live in better.

Speaking up says to the targeted person "You're safe." and it says to the hateful person "You can't do that here when I'm around."

When you don't speak up, you're saying the opposite.

If you speak up for those other groups, if you wear pins, and have hashtags for them on your profile, but not for Jews, you're making a clear statement. You're saying "You aren't someone I care about."
