Striscioni a Milano

Anarchist gathering in Rome for the “fallen in battle”. Banners in Milan.

Flowers at the site where their “killed in action” comrades died, as defined by Sara Ardizzone and Alessandro Mercogliano. Then a demonstration at Quarticciolo, not anymore at the Sabot Anarchist Library as circulated yesterday in the antagonistic blogosphere but at the Modesto Park in Veglia. This is the program of the Roman anarchists and not only for Sunday, March 29th, a day chosen to remember the two insurrectionist militants who died in the explosion of the farmhouse within the Acquedotti Park, in Rome, where they were preparing a bomb, probably for an attack on a target in the nearby area. The anarchists will meet at 9:30 am at the intersection of via Lemonia and circonvallazione Tuscolana and at 12 pm at via Trani and via Molfetta at Quarticciolo. Meanwhile, in Milan, specifically at the pedestrian bridge crossing the Naviglio Pavese, near via Gola, two banners appeared for “Sara and Sandro.” “Those who fight never die,” it reads, along with the inevitable “With Alfredo against the 41 bis,” with the symbol of the “A” circled. The reference is to the harsh prison regime for Alfredo Cospito, a symbol of the anarchist galaxy, held for the injury of Ansaldo Nucleare manager Roberto Adinolfi, and dynamite attacks. By May 4th, the Minister of Justice is called to decide on the renewal of the 41 bis. A turning point date for which the anarchist galaxy has been preparing for a long time to raise the level of confrontation with the state.

Italy: Stronger Than Death

There is a huge difference between the violence of the oppressed and that of the oppressors: the former follows an ethic; the latter, none.
(Sara Ardizzone)

Our ability to speak and communicate does not allow us to venture onto the unexplored paths of taking personal responsibility for the risks we assume. Any discourse in this direction inevitably remains provisional, insufficient. To concretely seek freedom—in its authentic and integral form, not in the counterfeits bestowed and imposed by the State—means entering the dimension of risk inherent in the quest itself. In this place, our choices, often wild and solitary, mark the furrow of a road of no return. Freedom is a quality that is experienced by putting oneself at risk.

We say this without any rhetorical embellishment: the two anarchists found dead after the collapse of a farmhouse in Rome, Sara Ardizzone and Alessandro Mercogliano, are our comrades, and we are proud to count them among us. The paid hacks, from whose trashy papers we learned of the incident, repeatedly write of an explosive device going off. The anxious distancing, always aimed at ensuring a shameful safety, is not our way. We are accustomed to not believing a word of what is uttered by the propaganda machine, but if there were a glimmer of truth regarding the “leaked” information, we cannot fail to dwell on the fundamental fact: Sara and Sandro died in action; they died fighting. Social war is not a performance, a lifestyle, or a subculture. It is, first and foremost, a war. Sara and Sandro are a shining example of the inextricable union of thought and action that inspires anarchism—revolutionaries until the very last moment of their lives, and in death.

Sara and Sandro are and always will be a part of our hearts—hearts that simply cannot bring themselves to write an obituary.

The ramblings of today’s lords of the Inquisition and repression go hand in hand with those of the masters of war and exploitation. The perpetrators of massacres, the mass murderers, the purveyors of death cry scandal over the anarchists’ bombs.

With Sara and Sandro, we shared an unquenchable passion for anarchist thought and action. With them, some of us lived, sharing the feverish intensity of moments that no clock could ever measure. With them, when we were targeted by the machinery of state repression, we maintained our dignity and strengthened the resolve behind our choices. We are certain of this: those endless days of ours will never become a faded memory. Moments that were not based on ideological chatter, but on the conviction of our paths, on feelings, on mutual trust, on the joy of life. All of us who knew them deeply know that there will never be words adequate to describe their modesty, their gentleness, their dignity.

That is why Sara and Sandro’s revolutionary spirit has the power to transcend time, overcoming suffering and pain. Their passion for life will be stronger than death. Their integrity will forever serve as a warning to every oppressor.
