Despite that, one ought to make an effort to maintain good relations. There is always something to be learned from the opinions of our elders if one only listens without prejudice and reflects on it; and there is even more to be learned from their experience.

To test the necessity of a parochial school, and not simply to defend it blindly, is, of course, entirely permissible. Otherwise, one will never be able to convince people who have a different viewpoint. Perhaps by autumn, you will be able to save up some questions that you can present to me in a study group, preferably in Speyer.

The problem of keeping company with the young teachers is not such a simple one. It is very natural for young people to enjoy the company of other young people. And it is also very natural to find particular enjoyment in being together with people of the opposite sex. I believe both of these experiences were true in your case, and simply admitting it to yourself was all you had to do—after all, there’s nothing whatever wrong with it—nor should you have felt it was permissible for you only because of the others.

If one is intent on having all of one’s life consist exclusively of sacrifices, the danger of pharisaism is around the corner. Of course, when one becomes aware that there is a personal risk in matters that are innocent in themselves, then one must be on guard against them.
