I discuss how and why users cry to 'affectuate' bonds in an attempt to build their personal brands.

The #CryingVideos have a mass appeal because of their impropriety. Their impudence challenges authoritative norms of screen performances, the dictations of what should be seen and shown and what shouldn’t.

ICA Preconference: Key themes in digital disconnection research: Authenticity, wellness, datafication and power - Department of Media and Communication

Disconnection studies has emerged as an umbrella term for investigating why and how citizens take breaks from digital communication. Following a successful ICA preconference in Paris May 2022, the preconference in Toronto explores four critical themes in this emerging area: Authenticity, wellness, datafication and power. ByteDance used TikTok to track my location — and the locations of two of my colleagues — to try to find our sources. We reported on this back in October, but kept things vague to protect sources. Today ByteDance admitted it, so we can say much more:

I'm hosting a webinar about trust and safety on the fediverse this Thursday, Dec 8th at 12pm Eastern. It's an introduction to the state of content moderation and community safety here.
