My latest article on #CryingVideos of #Instagram #TikTok is published!

Read #OpenAccess: http://bit.ly/3OTyfJq

I discuss how and why users cry to 'affectuate' bonds in an attempt to build their personal brands.

The #CryingVideos have a mass appeal because of their impropriety. Their impudence challenges authoritative norms of screen performances, the dictations of what should be seen and shown and what shouldn’t.

Feedback and commments welcome!

The point of destroying Twitter’s verification system isn’t to make money. It’s to destabilize reporting and make it impossible to determine if sources are legitimate.

There is a long list of interesting pre- and post-conferences to #ica23, and some are still accepting abstracts. If I was planning to go to Toronto I would be torn between attending these two, both arranged by such nice and smart scholars:

Key themes in disconnection research - deadline Jan 20th

ICA Preconference: Key themes in digital disconnection research: Authenticity, wellness, datafication and power - Department of Media and Communication

Disconnection studies has emerged as an umbrella term for investigating why and how citizens take breaks from digital communication. Following a successful ICA preconference in Paris May 2022, the preconference in Toronto explores four critical themes in this emerging area: Authenticity, wellness, datafication and power. The preconference takes place locally in Toronto the day before the main conference. Call for abstracts here. Deadline January 20th, 2023.

My first-ever full paper submission to #ICA23 for Political Communication Divisions (@PolComm) has been accepted! I will be presenting on new platforms and affordances that gamify hate and violence against minorities. So chuffed and I can't keep calm. Attending Annual @ICAHDQ Conference has been a dream. Here I come, Toronto! 🍻

ByteDance used TikTok to track my location — and the locations of two of my colleagues — to try to find our sources. We reported on this back in October, but kept things vague to protect sources. Today ByteDance admitted it, so we can say much more:

EXCLUSIVE: TikTok Spied On Forbes Journalists

ByteDance confirmed it used TikTok to monitor journalists’ physical location using their IP addresses, as first reported by Forbes in October.

I have no skin in this game, but I think this is a remarkable opportunity for @sociology grad students

"The Network for a New Political Economy at UC Berkeley is hosting a week-long summer workshop for early career sociologists... to gather, share their work, and think through what political-economy might look like in contemporary sociology. "

What a great end-of-year present! I have won a very competitive (individual) grant from Koneen Säätiö (Kone Foundation) for my 4-year research project that employs #SensoryEthnography and #NarrativeAnalysis to explore mediatised memories of violence. Hurray! Kone Foundation is my Santa this year! 🎉

I'm hosting a webinar about trust and safety on the fediverse this Thursday, Dec 8th at 12pm Eastern. It's an introduction to the state of content moderation and community safety here.

I hope it will be useful to people at civil society organizations who have perhaps heard about Mastodon and the fediverse and would like to know more about where there are gaps in funding and services, and places where orgs could potentially help augment what's already happening.

Webinar: Trust and safety on the fediverse

We are happy to invite you to attend a webinar hosted by Darius Kazemi, an engineer at Meedan who for five years has been writing about the fediverse and writing software for its users. He will be joined by content moderation expert Kat Lo and security expert Aaron Huslage.
