The point of destroying Twitter’s verification system isn’t to make money. It’s to destabilize reporting and make it impossible to determine if sources are legitimate.
@Jake_Vig if musk were so smart
@dianes_lesshostileusername @Jake_Vig
ELoon may not be that smart, but BoneSaw, Murdoch, and Putrid his co-conspirators have proven to be intelligent at using disinformation to destabilize their opponents, #JustSayin

@Jake_Vig One positive outcome of Musk's new "Checkmark" system:

It's now easy to spot morons willing to pay a billionaire $8/mth just to display a meaningless decoration next to their name. 🤦‍♂️

@MugsysRapSheet @Jake_Vig
I think this is the intent. The mark used to mean you can trust this person, now it means you shouldn't. He destroyed the ability to discern what's true because he's a fascist who made billions from government contracts so now he's working to destroy liberalism and accountability.

@Jake_Vig It's not this at all, it's just the predictably petty drama of an extremely divorced cishet white man when he happens to be rich AF. There is no nefarious chess game at play, he's just lashing out at the people he thinks are the cause of his "suffering", anything to avoid admitting he's the cause of his own problems. This is just what happens when that same guy happens to have been the children of apartheid emerald mine slavers.

It's genuinely not that complicated. If Musk were a woman everyone would recognize it for the mundane pettiness it is, but he's a man so he's gotta be playing 4-dimensional Chess. Fucking exhausting.

edit--lmfao Jake blocked me over this? What a loser.

@Jake_Vig errr to be honest calling that a reporting is really a stretch. It has never been smart to rely on tweets for it.
@peteriskrisjanis Twitter was literally the number one place for breaking news and where people “gathered” for it.
@Jake_Vig and I always have seen it as very, very problematic.
@peteriskrisjanis @Jake_Vig serious question: should the post office offer some type of social media/ news algorithm/ service? It would be beholden to the constitution and bill of rights, and could also be policed for bad actors. If Musk is complaining about losses, USPS operates at a loss to make itself affordable. Plus: no billionaires in charge
@peteriskrisjanis @Jake_Vig twitter was the quickest and most reliable site for emergency information and breaking news for like 10 years. Now it barely functions as infotainment
@Jake_Vig It doesn’t have to be a conspiracy, it can just be stupid.
@Jake_Vig glad people are leaving 😁
@Jake_Vig it’s totally useless for emergencies now, and for news it’s completely broken. Purely an entertainment platform at this point, and that’s debatable.
@Jake_Vig hopefully the app implodes before the upcoming US election because right now it’s pretty quickly becoming an alt-right ass kisser paradise, which I imagine will serve the propaganda machine.
@Jake_Vig
It seems like folks on Twitter could easily self-verify by putting their handle on their public presence: if you're at-joe, put "Reach me on Twitter at at-joe" on your website, in your podcast, your book, or whatever you're trying to use to anchor your identity. It's essentially how Mastodon does it, just without support in the platform.

@Jake_Vig

There may not be any point or plan. This is more like a thoughtless emperor in the late Roman era. (See also SpaceX launch disaster.)

@Jake_Vig @alexwild wildly successful implementation of auto self-destruct.
@Jake_Vig I agree. Musk bought it to further confusion and disinformation for his and other oligarch's goals.
@Jake_Vig bingo. Elon could have combined verification with a small fee, but he chose not to. as a general rule I've found that I can deduce a person's real motives by spotting the inconvenient facts they keep choosing to dance around
@Jake_Vig BINGO.
And to Musk's backers, that's a BARGAIN at 42 billion.
@Jake_Vig coming from an unverified account, i cant say of youre serious or not. Let alone if your statement is correct 🫣
@Jake_Vig musk isn't that smart, Its just to make money
@Jake_Vig absolutely this. Destroying Twitter as a reasonable communication channel for reasonable people is absolutely worth more than $44B to many. ♥️💔
@Jake_Vig among other things yes...
@Jake_Vig I think it may actually be a combination of both.
@Jake_Vig @rolle At least considering twitter’s engagement model that’s probably right. The more infighting there is between users about which source are legimate, the more engagement there will be. The race to the bottom of the brainstem is still on, in there at least.
@Jake_Vig Especially when you remember that the Saudi government is backing and funding Musk. The Saudi government has been trying to do this for years and now they have a puppet that owns the site.

@Jake_Vig

I mean. That's the primary consequence. But the goal is to massage Elon's ego because he's a manchild who's super butthurt over every verified account that ever proved him wrong or rightfully called him an idiot

Create ‘chaos’. That’s what it’s all about. Some say they thrive in it and many justifying their not leaving Twitter because of that. There have already been 20 posts on this in my timeline - Pele, Biden’s son etc. Goes to show that it’s garnering the attention that Musk wanted. He again, played you all.
@Jake_Vig That says that no one should rely on Twitter for anything. We had other ways of determining if sources were legitimate long before social media, and reporters did those things back in the day when they weren't as lazy...
@Jake_Vig Dunno if that was the intent, but that was the obvious consequence from the start.
@Jake_Vig He's simultaneously disabled anonymous searching. Now you can only search Twitter if you are logged in which opens up possibilities for all kinds of shenanigans. Can we trust the troll in chief to not inject or exclude tweets for targeted journalists and politicians?
