I was just assaulted by some twelve year old wannabe roadman with a sour patch kid. He pelted it at me because I said I didn't want to eat it, thanks. I was like "well that was a waste" whilst his friend apologised on his behalf. ๐Ÿคฃ
I think I made a few extremely bold decisions (you want _what_?) that most people would shy away from. They're the kind of things that are really difficult to envision altogether as part of an end product. They could have ended up looking and feeling completely wrong. But they didn't, and holy shit it paid off.

So I paid some people an extortionate-for-me amount of money to completely rebuild our bathroom in a design of my own conception (with a focus on accessibility).

I asked for things that the fitters have never come across before in decades of bathroom fitting, but they managed it all very well.

Everyone has been gobsmacked by the end result. I have to admit, I'm shocked myself. I didn't imagine it would come together to resemble something out of a billionaire's mansion. ๐Ÿคฃ

At the weekend, a group of trans women protested topless at the Scottish Parliament about the recent Supreme Court ruling that the Equality Act defines women as "biological women". The police couldn't arrest them, because to arrest them for showing their breasts would be to define them as women (it's not illegal for men to be topless). And, of course, the right-wing press that reported on it censored their breasts, thereby making their point for them.

This is a great example of how you should write whatever you find most readable and maintainable, and let us worry about efficiency. Wtih this PR, the "slow" approach becomes a "fast" one.

Folks, a while ago I discovered a clever form of #knitting called illusion or shadow knitting.

Itโ€™s where a pattern is formed by stitches that only appear when viewed at a certain angle. It sounds complicated, but itโ€™s just a combination of basic knit and purl stitches.

Anyway, I thought Iโ€™d do a quick test and I made this maple leaf and I must admit, I love how it turned out!

I think I might have a go at making a larger piece that can be viewed from the side, so I can hang it somewhere in the house.

Introduction to illlusion knitting

@Sobtanian This is so cool! It's like a permanent form of the "velvet drawing" or "sequin drawing" that I used to enjoy as a kid with a couch pillow :D

@canadaduane I know what you mean and I agree!

Maybe my next one should be a big penis haha.

@Sobtanian redrum
@grumpasaurus Good idea. Might make that my next one.
@Sobtanian Not sure if anyone has suggested it, but it would be interesting to also incorporate perspective skew so that it โ€œlooks correctโ€ when viewed at the revealing angle.
@voided Not sure what you mean, I think it looks correct as is ๐Ÿ˜…
@Sobtanian like how forced perspective art works

@voided Yes I was wondering if this what you meant.

Iโ€™m not sure it would work, the knitting illusion works by having bumps that arenโ€™t visible until you look from an angle, creating a silhouette of the art (in this case a leaf), so those bumps might mess with the perspective warp.

However: any picture can be turned into an illusion knitting pattern so maybe Iโ€™ll try finding a simple forced perspective piece and knitting it, to test our theory.

@Sobtanian I did think that the resolution of the knitting pattern may be a limiting factor. Though could work for simple shapes.
@Sobtanian This is so cool and so well done
@Sobtanian This is very cool! My wife gave me a scarf a few years ago with Tux, the Linux mascot, using the same technique.

@eivindmork Perfect!

Opposite for me, I knit for my wife haha. Was thinking of making her a jumper with hidden art in it using this method.

Have you played Alan Wake 2 at all?

@Sobtanian @lowrah

May I? (This is from way back before, when all pirates still kicked arse.) The motive on the back was straight inlay, the sleeves have secret skulls.

@Antimony @lowrah beautiful.

I was thinking of knitting a jumper for my wife with a hidden motif in it, like these sleeves.

@Sobtanian @lowrah Really works best with sleeves because arms are so movable :D
@Sobtanian I really like this technique. It's crazy subtle in the first photo.
@gooba42 Yes, once you know what the illusion is you can kinda see it but very faintly.
@Sobtanian that is cool as hell

@Anarchy_How Whatโ€™s cool as hell is that you teach religious studies yet say cool as hell!

Thanks, I really like how simple it is yet effective.

@Sobtanian illusion knitting is so fun! I did a colourwork blanket using it a few years ago!
@Sobtanian @FrazzledBrynn Iโ€™m imagining a quilt made from squares that use this effect. Looks great on the bed. Confuses the heck out of people otherwise.
@Sobtanian Yes! I also only saw this recently. SO clever. Your maple leaf is fantastic!

@GinevraCat thanks! The pattern is free (Iโ€™ve linked to it in a comment to the original post) and I just followed it.

I then went on to create my own pattern entirely from scratch. It was quite a challenge but the results were worth it.

Attached: 3 images I wanted to have a go at making my own illusion #knitting pattern completely from scratch, to make something I could hang on the wall. So, I decided to try and convert Jarreโ€™s Concerts in China cover to an illusion knitting chart. It wasnโ€™t easy, in fact it was harder than knitting the damn thing ๐Ÿ˜… But I managed it in the end and I think the results are quite good, especially for a first attempt ๐Ÿ˜Š My wife is gonna frame it for me soon then itโ€™ll go on the Jarre wall. Yes, I have a Jarre wall. BITE ME.
