Change my mind: Economists are mostly reactionary ideologues.

Every time the Nobel Prize for Economics is awarded, I snort with derision.

(Article says economists were - gasp - wrong about the effects of California's $20/hr minimum wage for fast food jobs.)

Economists warned California not to raise the minimum wage to $20. They were wrong in almost every way so far, another economist says

“The results are nowhere as dire as predicted,” Berkeley’s Michael Reich told Fortune.

Hi void!

Left twitter ages ago, annoyed with bsky at the moment, heard about this so trying it out.

Mini #introduction : I'm 20, ND, my hobbies float around but I'm into #writing , #junkjournaling , and #gardening the most right now

I also like #animalcrossing , #thesims , #thepitt , #twinpeaks , and random cartoons in terms of media. It varies.

I like engaging with other people too!

This afternoon, the House will vote on reauthorizing a little-known law that lets the government sidestep the Constitution and spy on US citizens.

Call your representative and tell them to vote NO on Section 702 to stop Trump from gobbling up mass surveillance data: https://indivisible.org/actions/tell-representatives-no-to-ai-warrantless-mass-surveillance/?source=mastodon

Demand Representatives to Say No to AI Warrantless Mass Surveillance | Indivisible

War on Terror-era legislation that authorized decades of civil liberties-eroding mass surveillance expires on April 19. Let your Representatives know you expect them to reject reauthorization without significant reforms to protect civil liberties.

If *I* were an investigative journalist, this is a piece I'd be pouring a lot of energy into. I know we have a few investigative journalists on here... maybe someone wants to take it up?

Well this is truly bad. US national level OS-level age verification bill. https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/8250/all-info

The text of it isn't out yet.

EDIT: Well the text is now out and it's as bad as you could imagine. It's not even just that you need to verify your age to access a website... operating systems must verify your age to let you *use a computer at all*

EDIT EDIT: Thanks to @Andres4NY for pointing out that it also holds responsible anyone who has any software shipped on the operating system of a computer, meaning FOSS developers eveywhere

@cwebber @Andres4NY

The US is a fascist dictatorship, but under normal situations, using a computer is clear and obvious speech, like using a printing press, and prior restraint on speech by first requiring age verification is bullshit according to lots of "settled" case law. Of course, none of that applies under a system where any old bullshit invented by Nazis goes through the SCOTUS with an express lane sticker.

Mainstream #Linux sure looks like they want to ignore what's coming. They really should wake the fuck up. @eff ???

#DistroWatch search finds 140 #distributions listed that do NOT use #systemd for init, and that number includes _all_ types of OS's, including the #BSD and #Solaris derivatives.

The search form allows for further filtering to help match your requirements.

1 of 2 Sascha Riley, War Veteran & Epstein Survivor, named multiple current sitting members of govt as being present at or participating in parties where kids were being abused, including:
• Andy Biggs - U.S. Rep.
• Lindsey Graham - U.S. Senator
• Clarence Thomas - Supreme Court Justice
• Jim Jordan - U.S. Rep + Chairman of House JC
• Donald Trump - President of the United States

If this system exists at all, then everyone subject to it is one state-coerced software update from away from their computer working for them only at the whim of that state. Age, gender, race, disability, debt, credit rating, citizenship, neighborhood, search history, political affiliation, all of that plus the state itself is one breach away from no computer working - or only the _right people's_ computers working, you understand - at all.

Age verification is the footgun of public democracy.

“As a reminder, this was the incident where DHS officers rappelled from a Blackhawk helicopter in front of videographers DHS had brought to the raid, where Stephen Miller claimed it was a building full of ‘terrorists,’ and where children and American citizens ended up in zip ties.”
