Happy to see my tax money well-spent 😊🥳

Apparently accessibility fixes in Mastodon were largely sponsored by the Dutch government. Public money funding public code benefitting us all, regardless of where you live or your nationality. Awesome!

Almost forgot...well done & congrats on release 4.6 @Mastodon people & floss contributors 🎂🫶 🎉

TOP TIP: buy superglue (aka cyanoacrylate glue, CA glue, Krazy Glue etc) in bottles of at least 50mL. "But I'll never get through that much before it dries out!" you say. But no! It dries out quickly *because* it's in a small container. In larger bottles, as well as being much cheaper per millilitre, it lasts *years*.

Also, buy the runny stuff rather than the gel kind. Much easier to use (EDIT: for woodworking and repairs, other applications may have different needs).

i was extremely unhappy to learn, just now, that apparently when you shake your android device while running firefox, it will make an AI-generated summary of whatever you are looking it.

part of why i was extremely unhappy is because i DEFINITELY DISABLED THIS.

Mastodon 4.6 has been released:

"You can now control whether a “Media” tab shows at all, and if so, whether it should include media attachments from your replies to other people or not. This way, if you want to use it as a portfolio while hiding the GIFs and memes you use to respond to others, you can."

Someone finally got it.

Mastodon 4.6

In Mastodon 4.6, we are introducing a way to create and share curated collections of profiles. We've also reworked profiles and the profile editing experience, added some institutional features, and fixed many accessibility issues.

Another AI argument: "I'm studying Japanese and asked Claude to make flashcards based on the grammar points in my Japanese textbook, and it did in minutes what it would have taken me hours"

What if I told you that the act of making the flashcards is studying? When I went through the Naval Nuclear Program I went through a very similar process of making flashcards for all the things we would be tested on. I never actually had to use the cards. Making them was all I needed to do to sufficiently remember.

There is no way to optimize your way out of the learning process. It always takes the same amount of effort in the end.

Except.

It's worse than that. In the Cap'n Crunch whistle case, it's at least a closed problem as to how to filter out instructions from an untrusted stream. You still need to worry about when it's safe to let instructions through and when it isn't, so out-of-band is still much better, but at least you know what frequencies to filter out and the like.

For LLMs, any sequence of words could be bad for your product! Filtering out instructions is a completely open-ended problem!
