Wizards are always troubled about the future. I do not like worrying about the future. I am not altogether on anybody’s side, because nobody is altogether on my side, if you understand me: nobody cares for the woods as I care for them, not even Elves nowadays. Still, I take more kindly to Elves than to others. And there are some things, of course, whose side I am altogether not on; I am against them altogether: these — burárum — these Orcs, and their masters.

Actually, do you think the astronauts stranded on the International Space Station might want to participate in #Monsterdon? This may be the closest we'll ever get to an actual, honest to god Mystery Science Theater 3000. #MST3k

75 days. #Birds are amazing. This year I learned the term 'precocial species' which describes animals like #chickens whose babies are up and running and feeding on their own almost immediately. Many birds aren't!

Should've only taken 30 minutes but I got distracted by the #castlevania 'Rondo of Blood' episode of Gamecenter CX my son was watching.

It could be Wuthering Heights, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Abbey Road, Starry Night, Court and Spark, doesn't matter. Someone suggested they should, so they'll go to their grave never looking at it because fuck you, dad. I get it but also I don't. Feels very "cut off your nose to spite your face"
Found out recently that two of my friends have never seen and were seemingly completely unfamiliar with any #studioghibli movie, even though both like tons of things (classic #Disney #movies, watching #anime with their kids) that seem relevant. Made me think about the phenomenon I call, "Fuck you, Dad." regarding #media recommendations. As in, "This might be EXACTLY my jam, and the greatest thing of all time, but BECAUSE I felt slightly pressured about it, now I'm NEVER gonna ON PRINCIPLE." 1/

We usually have another couple (my workout buddy and her husband) over on Sunday nights to eat dinner and watch a movie. It's win-win for us: we love seeing them, like watching movies, AND it's good motivation for us to keep the house clean and cook a pile of food to start the week with leftovers. Last night, though, they had to cancel last minute due to getting sick so we have the non-problem of having a mountain of chicken tikka and naan to eat. Oh DARN.

What always confused me about Twitter and now Bluesky and Threads is that it often seemed like there was a meta layer I didn't have access to behind why particular posts were popular. Like: that the poster had a big following from their main gig elsewhere (e.g. YT, Twitch, Insta). So their extremely low-effort, unfunny, low content post would have TONS of interaction because of who the poster is, not the content they posted. Mastodon FEELS a bit more meritocratic so far, even if much smaller.

One thing I like about #Mastodon as opposed to #Bluesky or #Tumblr is that since there's basically zero prospect of ever going viral or being a dril-like posting superstar here, most people on Mastodon aren't trying to be ironic shitposters (or worse, influencers) but instead are sincerely posting about their actual lives and opinions. I like that. I get why some people think it's humorless and dull but I like it. Kinda OG livejournal vibe.
