TrinsecJust finished watching Mary and the Witch's Flower, a Japanese animation of which the art is very similar to Studio Ghibli's movies. A quick Wikipedia glance confirms it for me, there are people working at Studio Ponoc who've worked at Ghibli before. Neat, that's another studio to keep on the lookout for!
This movie has a nice enough storyline, it's action-packed and plays in a fantastic setting beyond the normal world. Just like most of Ghibli's movies. At least this one makes more sense than The Boy and the Heron, that one was just outright weird.
Anyway, I'm a sucker for stories playing in a hidden/another/secret realm beyond the normal world. I absolutely loved Spirited Away. Story-wise this one's not as great, but it was plenty enjoyable enough to watch. Graphically it's pretty good.
Basically girl moves to a new place. Finds special flowers. Ends up in some magical place. Chaos ensues! And those cats? I wish I could cuddle them! I think they could use a good cuddle, they always look so grumpy.

Mit der Neuauflage des Manga-Comics Nausicaa wird ein frühes Meisterwerk von Ghibli-Gründer Hayao Miyazaki erstmals auf Deutsch zugänglich. Im Zentrum steht Prinzessin Nausicaa, die in einer postapokalyptischen Welt lebt, „in der ein giftiger Urwald die Erde zurückerobert – als Reaktion auf Krieg und Umweltzerstörung“, sagt SWR KULTUR-Comicexperte Max Bauer. Die Geschichte verbindet ökologische Themen mit einer tiefgründigen Heldinnenreise und wirkt dabei heute aktueller denn je. „Nausicaa ist keine klassische Kämpferin, sondern eine Forscherin, die das Geheimnis hinter dem scheinbar feindlichen Wald entschlüsselt“, so Bauer. Der Comic gilt als Grundlage für den späteren Welterfolg der Ghibli-Filme und thematisiert die Zerstörungskraft menschlicher Herrschsucht. Miyazakis Handschrift sei dabei unverkennbar: „Diese Werke erzählen mit einer lieblichen Formsprache von zutiefst politischen und oft düsteren Themen.“ Dass KI-generierte Bilder im Ghibli-Stil derzeit im Netz kursieren, zeige laut Bauer nur, „wie wenig dieser Trend den Kern von Miyazakis Werk verstanden hat“. Die Nausicaa-Neuauflage bietet nun die Gelegenheit, sich diesem vielschichtigen Original in seiner ganzen Tiefe zu nähern.
