Just stole about 2 dozen eggs from a broody hen #backyardchickens #chickens

Had a couple of field rats show up to steal chicken feed from the hens, so we've gone into no-open-food mode: the hens can eat from the feeder when they're in the henhouse and the door is closed. If the door is open, the feeder is put in a lidded metal can. Also no composting until this is resolved.

Also trimmed all the cover so maybe the owl or fox will do their jobs. We don't want to use poison and harm the predators, so we put out a trap. Got one rat overnight.

Not sure I’ve ever cried so much as over Agatha, our rescue chicken who has died suddenly, before she had a change to regrow feathers. These ex-commercial egg hens are often in such an awful state even though they’re ā€œfree rangeā€. She had six months of happy foraging though, at least. #chickens #backyardchickens #rescuehens

This chicken is such a spaz, here she is trying to make a nest in the middle of our lawn. Yesterday I found her trapper in an empty 55 gallon metal drum.

She often climbs up a trellis looking for a spot to lay.

Those of you with chickens, how to you feed them? Do you groe any of their food? Do you buy ready-made food? Do you mix ingredients yourself? Do you compost in the coop area? How? How often do you feed?

We still have half a bag of dry chick feed because its what the old hen is used to but we want proper food for them. Just like with the dog, I want real food for them, not dry kibble.

@rootsandcalluses

Great that you're getting them used to human touch. They'll be more social as they mature.
