Sorry about the brief outage some of you might have experienced.

We've upgraded to Mastodon 4.4.0 this morning and it appears that one of our themes didn't play well and broke all of the assets (caching kept things working for a while, but eventually refreshed and caused things to stop working).

An update of the theme and recompiling the assets got things fixed though so we're all stable now. 🤓

Turns out running large scale events is hard, who would have thought?
🤣

Game design friends, is there a widely accepted term similar to “progressive disclosure” in UX but for introducing mechanics, abilities, etc.? E.g. in a platformer where you can jump, push blocks, wall jump, etc. the level design basically forces you to learn the abilities as you go, “just in time” to complete the new challenges instead of all up front.

Maybe progressive disclosure isn't a perfect UX equivalent, either—it might be more like “guided discovery” or something.

@Wuzzy Its really hard for me to take the Spyware Watchdog site seriously when the articles you linked are at least several years out of date.

I'm not saying things have changed and they are better, but Brave is using its own search engine by default now, not Google. Looking at the Firefox article on the site, it was last tested with version 58 from 2018, and Vivaldi was testing on version 5.2.2623.48, from 2022.

Unless some people pop up out of nowhere, its looking like the GNOME Foundation election may have the same issue as OpenSUSE's recent election where they didn't even have enough people running to fill the empty seats.

Currently 2 candidacies are announced for 4 open seats and nominations end on the 3rd of June. This is a massive drop from 11 candidates last year. So I guess if you want an easy seat now is the time to get one.

The End (of Windows 10) is nigh!

On 14 October, #Microsoft will end support for #Win10.

This will turn hundreds of millions of computers that cannot upgrade to #Win11 into security risks and #eWaste.

Yours may be one of them!

But what if you could make your current one fast and secure again?

@Endof10

Has anyone seen an article on how to prevent Microsoft from accessing OUR Windows 10 machines? I'm especially interested in letting it have full access to our ethernet system, but no access to the internet. The searches I tried were all defeated, by results on how to do the opposite...

@Walrus @Endof10

One way I could imagine is via the router and the computers MAC-address (which identifies hardware): telling it to firewall it from the internet, but allow access to the LAN (local home network).

@Nihils @Endof10

Yes, I expect there is such a mechanism. What is needed is a tool with an understandable interface, that can just set that up. I'm happy with editing the registry, but surely someone has written something to do it......

@Walrus @Nihils @Endof10 Search for "cmd" to open Windows' command line program

Type ipconfig

This will get you the network information of the computer

Then log in to the Router's admin interface using your browser. You will get a graphical user interface there. What this will look like will depend greatly on your router.

@gunchleoc @Nihils @Endof10

Thank you! I was looking for something that would just do it. 😎

@Endof10
BTW I sent in a json by mail but have not been added to Places on the site - or gotten any response. Any idea?

@Endof10

THE YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP IS FINALLY UNPON THEE!!!!!

@Endof10 my cpu may be old but I'm running llm's locally on my 3060 12 GB and getting work done all day. For Microsoft this pc is trash... Just a question... Why?!??
I would consider trash those 4 gig machines that "run" W11 with really weak hardware.
I already have Debian installed and plan to cut off W10 from the network to keep it safe for the very little work I cannot do on Linux.
Behold #theLinuxYear
@Endof10 The Programname Windows says it all, Open a Window........and throw it out of the Window (The Software) 😎

@Endof10

This is awesome! I sent a .json to the campaign vi a email and signed it with my English Fosstodon-account (@neb). I hope it will be merged even though it uses Facebook as the domain as I don't have a site up and running.

@Endof10
Bump (I am the same person behind these profiles).
@Endof10 Had to buy & install a TPM module (£18) in order to upgrade my Dad's machine to Windows 11.

@EliMuso You could actually skip that dependency, tho it could be tricky.

I think they removed the dependency officially now, from the iso only.

@Azarilh It's a very grey area, that one. Been reading up on it a lot, got thoroughly confused & then bit the bullet - it's only £18.
@Endof10 It really annoys me when tech firms drop support for existing products no doubt hoping we'll all upgrade our perfectly serviceable desktops and laptops. Their attitude to waste in a World with limited resources is frightening. No wonder capitalism is struggling to deal with Climate Change.
#climatechange

@IndyRichard Free market capitalism assumes resources are unlimited. :/

What could go wrong...

@Endof10
> Yours may be one of them!
Me: *Stares at the OpenSUSE computer* Are you secretly Windows? ARE YOU SECRETLY WINDOWS!?
@Endof10 can you explain where i can see the number of my windows? Not sure if I have 10 on my refurbished laptop :-)
@Nic3 @Endof10 You can find that information in the Settings app > System > About, and on the "Edition" line under the "Windows specifications" section it should say the Windows version followed by the edition you're running (i.e. "Windows 11 Home", "Windows 10 Pro", etc.).
@Nic3 @Endof10
1. Hold down the Windows key, then press R
2. A window with a text box should appear.
3. Type: winver
4. Press return.
5. A window should appear, containing all the details about your current windows version.
@Endof10 Already planning to move to Linux and at the moment, leaning towards Mint. My Laptop and my desktop both are capable of running 11 but I tried it and hated it so I'm not upgrading.
@Endof10 so I am one with no path forward after win 10 ends support. I have a couple of possible options, opinions anyone? 1) Switch to Linux mint and take my chances for gaming with windows emulation, or, 2) dual boot win 10 and Linux mint, or, 3) install Linux mint and run win 10 in a virtual machine, or, 4) install Linux mint and buy a steam deck, hoping that all of my retro gaming can be accommodated.
@wrath0110 @Endof10 Install Linux Mint. It's really hard to break. Steam is available right away in the software manager. You can check how well your favourite games run beforehand on https://protondb.com
ProtonDB | Gaming know-how from the Linux and Steam Deck community

Game information for Proton, Linux, Steam Deck, and SteamOS

@wrath0110 what @fell says.
A lot (most) of games run well on Linux with steam.
Protondb is as great resource.

@wrath0110 @Endof10

FWIW, the main trouble spots for Linux gaming are titles with certain anti-cheat solutions (take a look at https://areweanticheatyet.com/ for more information). You'll also run into issues with certain productivity suites not running easily/well, e.g. MS Office, Adobe, etc., but there is alternative software depending on your needs. Besides that, most games run surprisingly well, and the experience as a whole is pleasant if it works for you.

Are We Anti-Cheat Yet?

@wrath0110 @Endof10

If it is about Retrogaming, there is Batocera, a specialized Linux-Distro for exactly that. More current games are more likely an issue. But It's mostly about Anticheat. Other options are modding Anything Ubuntu or Nobara. Or, if you are techy enough, Arch Linux. Steam works on And Desktop Linux quite fine. And the Steamdeck effectively runs an Arch Linux. So, its a Matter of comfort with initial configuration. At the end it will work either way.

A Windows VM is only an Option, if you really need (means no proper replacement Option, whichbos really rare in the meantime) a Software, which doesn't run with wine, no matter how hard you try.

If you have one or two of the problematic Games, I would keep a dual boot Windows-Linux.

@Endof10
I'm unconvinced that the end of formal Win10 support will turn remaining systems into security risks.

On the one hand, any as-yet-unpatched vulnerabilites WILL remain.

On the other hand, none of Microsoft's new Win11 fuckery will be backported to Win10, mitigating the additio0n of new vulnerabilities. Win10 has been under scrutiny for years, while Win11 is still pretty much a V1.0 product, as shown by Redmond's ongoing blunders..

On the gripping hand, operating a Win10 system behind a firewall, using an up-to-date browser, adblocker, and antivirus package, and avoiding dodgy Web sites and unverified downloads - all the normal security practices of a sensible computer user - should reduce the residual risk to threat levels comparable to a Win11 system, if not better.

@Endof10 Dear all, install Linux Mint, Libre Office and Thunderbird on you PC and avoid any stress and cost. I purchased a used Laptop 6 years ago and it works fine with Linux today.
@Endof10 Slightly disappointed to find that this is about Linux. Not for myself - it would be a great solution for me - if I used Windows! But sadly my elderly mother is on W10 on an old laptop and there's no way I can teach her to use Linux I'm afraid. Too much upheaval :(

@macronencer There is also the possibility of skipping or loosening the compatibility checks, and then upgrading to 11 on machines that do not fit the official requirements of Microsoft.

Here's one example article/guide that teaches how to do that: https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/bypass-windows-11-tpm-requirement

Edit: For others: As someone who loves using Linux, I'd recommend giving Linux a try if you can, but of course there's also many for whom that is not an option.

How to Bypass Windows 11's TPM, CPU and RAM Requirements

I shall look forward to a glut of cheap, powerful computers that will be perfect for a home lab.

@Endof10 Oh this is amazing! I'll have to get my local hackerspace on the list
But that TPM requirement isn't a real technical requirement? It's literally a trivially bypassable if statement
@Endof10 Mybusiness used to run 6 computers - I got so fed up with having to buy new ones every time Windows had another upgrade. A computer magazine had a free CD with Debian Linux. I installed it on our oldest machine - a 486. Worked perfectly. Installed it on a Pentium machine - at no cost for a second install. That was the end of Microsoft for me!
