This Orb-Weaver spider recently set up shop across the opening of our sliding patio door - he's about 1" long with legs stretched out and has about a 1/4" round abdomen. I don't know if he's trying to catch a German Shepherd to supply his winter food needs, but he's horribly outmatched in size. I think I'll let him catch bugs instead. Simon was our 2nd German Shepherd, shown in this picture from June 2011 when he was around 2 years old. We lost him suddenly in the fall of 2019 from heart problems.
He was hard to control for a few years but matured into a soft teddy bear that adored our grandkids. He loved to ride in the car and stare at people in other cars at stoplights until they responded to him. He made so many friends that way!

Tonight's loaf of banana pineapple blueberry bread was made using my new tool, thanks to my generous wife, Laura. When she told me she wanted to get me a KitchenAid, I said I don't have any upcoming gift dates to justify something like that. She said she just wanted to support my baking efforts because she knows I enjoy it and she appreciates it.
When she asked what color I wanted, I told her she could pick the color because they all work the same!

There's just something satisfying about creaming butter and sugar together with eggs! I can't explain it!
2) To make this lock, I dismantled an old combination lock to figure out how it worked, then I designed a set of spinning wooden wheels inside the lock that interact to determine the combination numbers that unlock it and release the wooden loop at the top. I created an Excel file to compute the needed wheel shapes for any desired combination based on a "meaningful" date, using it to make sure the unlock code was special to both my wife and me!

3 decades ago, I built this working wooden combination lock as a Valentine's Day gift for my new wife and have reaped the rewards of my effort ever since! I think it took 100+ hours to design and build it, missing Valentine's Day by a few days. It still works too!
I made 2 more for other couples, both still married. I'd like to think they kept all 3 couples together!

Dinner #tonight is my homemade potato soup containing potatoes, carrots, parsley, green onion, garlic, and chicken broth. The roux is made with butter, flour, salt, pepper, and milk. So simple, and yet so darned good!
