Software developer, dad, ham. Loads of other things, too, but that might be a lot!

Ham Radio Noteshttps://hobbies.chrispilcher.me/hamradio/

Okay folks, I'm going to shutter this account and move all of my #HamRadio shenanigans back over to my main account, @b4ux1t3.

I'm leaving the account open and logged in to my Mastodon apps, but I'm not going to be updating it directly.

I just found that the slight barrier of having to switch to this account before posting about ham stuff is just too much friction for me, and so I ended up not posting much.

See y'all on that account, if you come. 🖖

In a twist of irony, the app I wrote to get around finding a web calculator is now also on a website:

Look, I have a problem, okay, I had to give #FSharp with #Fable a try.

Since I know replies are a little wonky, I figured I'd post this as an OP:

Is anyone planning to stream their #HellFest #contesting? I'd love to be a fly on the wall for that mode. I'm open to YouTube or Twitch, doesn't really matter to me (I can't really do TikTok, but feel free to share if you're streaming on there, too!)

The #AntennaExperiment continues. The long-term goal here is to build a #yagi uda from first principles to work #AmSat #HamSat and #ARISS better.

In the short term, I plan on tying a bit of paracord to the hole at the end (Which I had to drill, thanks Lowes) and toss it in a tree for some #2M #POTA fun.

This is actually performing better to my local repeater held in my son's bedroom window than my ground plane antenna is that's on a mast on my shed-shack. 😬

I decided to stop googling "#Dipole calculator" every time I wanted to cut some wire, and built a command-line tool to do it for me.

Built in #FSharp and #DotNet 8, it handles pretty much anything you can throw at it, from HF up through SHF. 160M+ and anything higher than SHF isn't supported, but I don't expect many people are building dipoles for 160M or. . .what, 30GHz+?

In roughly one hour (9 PM Eastern), I'm going live on #Twitch to continue work on my arcade-style top down driving game!

A software developer and gamer of pretty freaking average proportions!

Like, even over an #rtlsdr, you can hear a distinct difference. Tested on #70cm from about the end of my yard on low power.

Another #hamr test I did today was to hear the audio quality difference over the air of the FT70D's built-in microphone versus Yaesu's SSM-17A. I use the 17A when I'm mobile, as it's much more convenient in the car (duh).

The quality difference is _staggering_, and not in the direction that I thought. The 17A has HORRIBLE audio; scratchy, tinny, quiet. The FT70D actually has pleasant audio, which is impressive given it's a freaking 200-dollar HT!

Truly the best #HamRadio I've purchased so far.

Man, I dialed that in pretty tight, eh?

I know #2m and #70cm antennas are sorta easy mode, but I'm proud of that!

It's a wonderful day for some lakeside #hamr with the baby!

Testing some packet radio applications over to my house (on the other side of the lake). #HamRadio #AmateurRadio #SDR #PacketRadio #2m #70cm
