The image in my header is of Datu Piang with his two young sons, his retainers, and a group of American military officers and colonial officials in the Philippines in about 1903. Known as the "King of Mindanao", he was one of the most powerful figures of his day in the Philippines and quite possibly the most fascinating of all America's overseas colonial "subjects."

A young woman poses in front of her home in Asyut, #Egypt. Out-of-focus but beautiful (#autochrome #photography was difficult in any setting other than bright light), this 1914 photograph by #AugustLeon looks strikingly modern.

#Introductions

I'm an anthropologist, writer, and the author of #MoroWarrior.

Former Associate Professor of #Anthropology (with tenure) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Left in 2001 to return to my homeland in the #SanFrancisco Bay Area. (Yes, I knew what I was giving up). Joined a Dot.Org research outfit in time to chronicle the rise of Google, Apple, Netflix, Twitter, you name it, for international organizations. Now happily back with my first love—anthropology.

Spam Benedict at Lucho’s Restaurant in San Francisco. It’s a dish both delicious and ironic because it pairs that most working-class of meat products with the most iconic dish of the leisure class—one invented at Delmonico’s and served at brunch. Chef and owner Lucho wasn’t trying to be ironic. He is from the Yucatan , and he added Spam Benedict to his menu because Spam is very popular in the Yucatan, especially when eaten with Pico de Gallo, which he also serves.

She wears the traditional hairstyle, with her hair formed into two horns and the lower part braided. Her crown-like hat, worn for traveling or special events, is made of velvet.

The First Colour Photographs of Ireland - 1913 - Flashbak

The 73 autochromes of Ireland that French academics Marguerite Mespoulet (1880-1965) and Madeleine Mignon (1882-1976) took in May and June 1913 are the first colour photographs of the island. Their Carnet d’Irlande was organised and sponsored by banker Albert Kahn (1860-1940) as part of his Archives de la Planète project. Launched in 1912, the … Continue reading "The First Colour Photographs of Ireland – 1913"

Marguerite #Mespoulet and Madeleine #Mignon, two very early color photographers, made 73 #autochrome #photographs in #Ireland in 1913 for Albert Kahn’s #ArchivesofthePlanet project. They are the first color photographs of Ireland and they include this stunning image of a 14-year-old girl in the village of Claddagh outside of #Galway.
The Irish photographs are not currently included in the digital archive of the #AlbertKahn Museum. My thanks to @anneeroper for letting me know about them.
