I make some music, am into podcasting, and can mix a great old fashioned.
I used to care about sports, but I think I finally care the appropriate amount.

Ep 18: Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame Part 1 by One man, one cat, small house

https://www.notinhalloffame.com/fictitious-athlete-hall-of-fame Once again this year the base ball hall of fame has decided to induct just ONE player into its hallowed halls.  THis seems a travesty of its own, and the steroid era weighs heavy on the count still.  THis is not how baseball is supposed to make us feel.  It supposed to be pastoral, the same game played by ruth and gehrig is played today (albeit with 6 more games and expanded playoffs and rosters)  Similarly the pro football hall of fame has become such a money grab and huge event (blown WAY out of proportion even according to this sports fan) that its hard to celebrate some of the players for the opposite reason, just too many (imo).   Isnt sports supposed to be an emotional connection?  There are some fictional athletes that have taken me on better journeys than their real life counterparts, and thats what were going to talk about this week.  A little site I found that got this episode off the ground, the fictitious athlete hall of fame. Welcome to 1m1csh Im Chris and this week were going to try something a little different around here.  I have used the benefits of ai to help me write up some NEW stories for some of these heroes of cinema and screen.  So this week, youll get a quasi historical write up, and perhaps some AI generated fanfic thrown in.  Since its ALL about fictitious characters, im going to let YOU decide which is which.  Do you know the stories of these on screen athletes? People love sports movies for a variety of reasons. One reason is that sports movies often have relatable and inspiring themes of overcoming adversity and achieving success against all odds. Additionally, sports movies often feature compelling characters and exciting game action that keeps audiences engaged. Additionally, many people enjoy the nostalgia associated with sports movies, which can remind people of their own experiences playing sports or watching them as a fan. Additionally, many sports movies are based on real-life events or real-life athletes, which can add a level of authenticity and realism to the story. Also, some people find that sports movies serve as an escape from the stresses of everyday life, allowing them to get lost in the action and drama of the story.

Ep 15: Oldest Animal History by One man, one cat, small house

Music this week:   Tennessee Waltz - Patti Page Rossini - The Barber of Seville Liszt - Orage  Josquin_ Missa De Beata Vergine - Gloria Intro:  Have you read Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness?  Maybe you've seen Apocalypse Now, but the original text is about a trip up the Congo in the late 1890s.  Conrad's depiction of the Congo would go on to be reported as factual by Roger Casement in 1904s Casement report, for which he was knighted in 1905 Maybe you know about A Japanese surprise attack on Port Arthur (Lushun) that starts the Russo-Japanese War. Have you heard about great acts of progress like the trans-siberian highway (finished) or Panama Canal (started)? What do these events have in common with this weeks podcast?  Lucile Randon, thats what! Who the heck is Lucile Randon?  Randon is a Roman Catholic nun, having converted to Catholicism as a young adult, working as a governess, teacher, and missionary before retiring at the age of 75. She has resided in a nursing home in Toulon, France, since 2009, she still resides there today, not in passing, but as The oldest living Human.  She was 10 years old when the first shots of the great war were fired, and last year, she survived covid.  This week, were talking about history, of living animals! Welcome to 1m 1c sh Im Chris, and this week, though you'll hear my dissent by the choices in news stories I share, there is no agenda, just some fun with history.

Hello it is me

Ep 14: Ranked Choice Voting : Making sense of a system that doesn't support you by One man, one cat, small house

Lets play democracy.  You're in a room with 99 other people, and you have to decide on your dinner and dessert.  There are 3 options for dinner, you decide to vote on whether it will be chicken, steak, or vegetarian.  The votes come in.  38 votes for vegetarian, okay, no worries that means most people want meat, youre going to get meat, right?  The votes finish.  Steak 32…Chicken 30.  The winner for dinner IS… the Cauliflower steak.  But how did this happen when most people wanted to have meat?  I mean 62 people wanted meat, what's the problem here? https://campaignlegal.org/democracyu/accountability/ranked-choice-voting

Ep 13: Sportswashing (is that too short?) by One man, one cat, small house

In the last decade there has been a trend for major sports and sports entertainment and entertainment companies to stage lucrative events in countries that have less than stellar reputations. WWE and UFC come to mind right away, and Maybe you have heard about the this thing called the world cup? The general idea of sportswashing is to associate a regime, nation, culture, or identity with a favorable outlook based on its support of sport, as opposed to its record on things like human rights.  For example, if your favorite team is bought by a Saudi corporation (looking at you Newcastle United) and they start spending money, and the team does well, you might think benevolently about the Saudis at first mention instead of associating them with say Kashoggi. Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf's Most Colorful Superstar : Column: LIV Golf and Saudi money may not be morally palatable, but sportswashing is nothing new History Extra: SPortswashing, a History
