#introduction Okay, after some fiddling I have consolidated my Project Mushroom account and my previous account on a federated server here, so hello (again)!

I am a freelance science writer based in eastern Washington. I mostly write about birds. Other interests: #knitting, #nativeplants, #parenting, #reading.

Do you have a business to promote or product to sell that would be of interest to #ornithology professionals? We're seeking prospective *vendors* for #WOS2023 next June. Email Peter Saenger at [email protected] by Jan. 31 to discuss arrangements! https://wos2023.org/call-for-symposiums-workshops-special-events/

ALSO, I wrote a really cool popular science book about the stories behind bird migration research that comes out in March. If you preorder it and forward your confirmation to me (first name dot last name at gmail) I'll mail you a signed bookplate! #ornithology #birds #bookstodon

Public Service Warning

Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when Musk pulled the employee purge.

It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.

We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.

I'm 3.5 years into this job, and while I think I'm very good at parts of it, I still have a ton to learn

I've got a ton of things on my plate that I don't enjoy and don't move me towards my goals, and there isn't room for other stuff that would fill my cup and bring me joy

gotta fix that, 2022 was the year of burnout and too much for me, I need to stop responding from a place of scarcity
