A few days ago, I suggested white drawing leads for marking dark wood for #woodworking but noted that I hadn't actually tried them yet. In the spirit of putting my money where my mouth is, I ordered a pack to try on a scrap of walnut. 12 leads for US$6.99, about $0.58 each.

Top part of the photo is the lead, bottom part is chalk.

They're ... meh. Not as good as I'd hoped. Slightly crumbly if you press too hard. More visible than my wife's fabric marking pencils, but not as good as chalk. Doesn't fill a knife line as well as chalk.

Could work, but chalk is probably better if you're OK with thick lines or fill a knife line..

I decided against trying to get a jointer and planer in my tiny workshop and got an old stanely jack plane. I am also keeping my eyes peeled for a number 4 plane also.
If I ever end up getting the cash together to build my workshop maybe ill get a power planer but I also don't wood work enough for that, and recycling tools that ate older than I am just feels right.

Sawmilling Redwood Boards

Just finished milling 50 boards from a massive redwood trunk I brought from Napa to Salem.
These boards will become benches and gardening builds in my greenhouse — the natural patina and lightness of redwood make it ideal for outdoor woodworking projects.
Took about two hours to mill and get everything squared up. More to come as I plane and build!

It's time for some wood clamp bondage again, and there are still many boards ahead of me.

Started this a bit ago but lost interest so it sat for quite some time. Now that Gig passed away, I figure it’s time to finish it. Posting this so that I have to keep at it. Please guilt trip me whenever possible. #Woodworking #Art

My first bespoke cribbage board. MN silhouette in Walnut wood, with turquoise inlay on most of the major rivers / lakes. 14" tall. Hand drilled, hand routed (no handy jigs that fit!).

Trying to make pretty things to fight the ugliness in the world. Stay strong, Minnesota.
